In 1995, Ajay and Kajol starred together in ‘Hulchul’ and ‘Gundaraj’. Though these films failed at the box office, stories about the relationship between the two had started. The two were madly in love with each other.

After the success of ‘Baazigar’ (1993) and ‘Karan Arjun’ (1995), SRK and Kajol were seen together in Aditya Chopra’s ‘Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge’, a film which turned out to be a monster hit. And soon the concentration shifted from Ajay-Kajol, to SRK-Kajol. Everyone was just praising the jodi, and their chemistry on screen. While talking to a leading daily about Kajol, Shah Rukh Khan had stated, “We vibe very well. She’s what my kid sister would be like. I feel very comfortable with her.”

It was said that as SRK and Kajol’s pairing was the talk of the town, Ajay, who was dating Kajol at that time, was not happy that people were praising SRK and his girlfriend’s jodi. An insider, in an entertainment portal stated, “People were talking less about Kajol’s relationship with Ajay and more about her friendship with SRK. All this took a toll on Ajay who felt sidelined. He allegedly couldn’t handle the pressure of everyone talking about the chemistry his competitor shared with the woman he was dating. He allegedly told her that she would have to stop working with Shah Rukh.”

Kajol turned down films with SRK

Apparently, Kajol rejected a few films with SRK, and one of the movies was to be directed by their ‘Baazigar’ directors, Abbas-Mustan. At that time, Shah Rukh Khan had told the media, “There’s this film by Abbas-Mustan in which I’d want Kajol to star opposite me. But she says she has no dates till September. If that doesn’t happen, we won’t be able to work with each other at least for the entire year.” Now we wonder if dates were an excuse to not do a film. When SRK was asked about Kajol not doing a film with him because of Ajay, the actor had said, “I wouldn’t really know if Ajay has put any condition. If Kajol doesn’t work with me because Ajay does not want her to, I will respect it. But I don’t really think this has happened. It’s quite strange. If Gauri was an actress, I wouldn’t tell her whom to work with and who not to.”

Tanuja’s interference in Kajol’s decision

At a party, Kajol’s mother, Tanuja was asked about Kajol’s decision of not working with SRK because of Ajay. To which she had said, “What rubbish! My daughter is old enough to know what she’s doing. Go, ask her, I am here to attend a party.” It is said that later the veteran actress told Kajol to not to take such decisions.

Finally, SRK and Kajol came back together on the big screen with Karan Johar’s ‘Kuch Kuch Hota Hai’ which once again turned out to be a super hit at the box office. The movie released in 1998, and Kajol and Ajay tied the knot in 1999. Later, in 2001, both were seen again in Karan Johar's ‘Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham’

Kajol opting for ‘Fanaa’ over ‘Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna’

Kajol once again made headlines, when she rejected Shah Rukh Khan-starrer ‘Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna’, and opted to star in Aamir Khan-starrer ‘Fanaa’. Once again it was said that Ajay was the reason that Kajol opted for ‘Fanaa’ and not ‘KANK’.

Once Again: The comeback of SRK and Kajol’s jodi

After a hiatus of nine years, Karan Johar once again got SRK and Kajol together on the big screen with ‘My Name Is Khan’. The movie was a hit, and then Kajol went on a maternity leave. After a gap of five years, in 2015, Kajol made her big screen comeback that too with SRK in the film ‘Dilwale’.

At the time of ‘Jab Tak Hai Jaan’ clash with ‘Son Of Sardaar’, both the actors had stated that they are not fighting on the personal front. Shah Rukh had said, “There is no fight between both of us. This is unnecessarily created by people. Both of us are actors. This is Ajay Devgn as a producer, fighting for his right with some other producer.” Ajay too had stated, “Personally, I have never had a fight with SRK. Kajol maintains her equations, I maintain mine. Professionally, he reminded me, through others, that he was also the producer of ‘Jab Tak Hai Jaan’. So he was on the other side of the firing line. Hence, technically, my fight was also against him. He made no attempts to rectify the wrong they (Adi and he) did. That’s why there is no equation between SRK and me.”

Earlier in 2015, a picture of Shah Rukh Khan and Ajay was doing the rounds of the social media in which the two were seen having dinner. While promoting ‘Dilwale’ SRK had said, "We don't sit down and chat. Ajay is a quiet guy and so am I in real life. I may come out as more talkative in public. We are friends. If I have any issue, I can pick up the phone at 3am and call Ajay and tell him 'Listen, I need Kajol to come and do this for me' and he will drive her. We are such kind of friends. It happens because we have space. We are married and have kids and somewhere we have parallel life.” “When Kajol lost her dad, I was driving down to airport and Ajay called me and said 'Listen, you are the first guy I am calling because you are a friend. Come here and be with Kajol. Bring Karan (Johar) along. It was not because we were the only ones he could take support from... It is because we all are friends. We are very different people," he added.

Kajol’s take on SRK and Ajay’s friendship

In 2015, Kajol had stated, "If two people are not friends, that doesn't mean they are enemies. I have said this earlier also. Just because they don't party together and you don't see them clicking selfies that doesn't mean that they hate each other or bad-mouth each other.” While we all know that SRK and Kajol share a great rapport with each other, but their friendship hasn't been extended to Ajay. The actress said, "Yes, Shah Rukh is my friend and I have been very clear that my friends are mine and I have never imposed my friendships on Ajay and he has never done it either. We are both very clear about it. You need to give people that space. There are people who you are close to, that I may not be close to and that does not make them enemies. Recently, they met each other in Bulgaria and they have met before also at our home. I don't think there is a discomfort, but I also don't think there is any friendship either. But there is nothing wrong with that.”

The cold war – a rumour or reality?

While some reports state that the two have had a cold war since early 90s, their statements really make us wonder if there was actually any war, apart from the ‘Jab Tak Hai Jaan’ clash with ‘Son Of Sardaar’. What do you guys think?
