AR Rahman Gets Relief From Delhi HC In Copyright Case

The Delhi High Court has allowed an appeal by music composer AR Rahman, cancelling a previous order that had temporarily stopped him from using the song ‘Veera Raja Veera’ from the 2023 film Ponniyin Selvan II. This order came from a Division Bench of Justices C Hari Shankar and Om Prakash Shukla.

Delhi HC Lifts Ban On AR Rahman’s Song

The earlier ban was based on a lawsuit filed by Ustad Faiyaz Wasifuddin Dagar, a classical singer and Padma Shri awardee. Dagar claimed that the song ‘Veera Raja Veera’ was copied from a classical composition called ‘Shiva Stuti’, created in the 1970s by his father and uncle, known as the Junior Dagar Brothers, who were famous for their Dhrupad music.

Justice Prathiba M Singh, in the earlier ruling, had agreed with Dagar, saying both songs were almost the same and only the lyrics had changed. In his case, Dagar said he owned the rights to the original composition and that ‘Shiva Stuti’ had been performed internationally, including in Amsterdam in 1978. He asked the court to stop the use of Rahman’s song and to give him credit for the original music. Dagar also said Rahman had once promised over the phone to look into the matter, but never followed up.

Rahman and the film companies denied the charges. Madras Talkies called the claims false and said the song was based on a traditional tune. They also accused Dagar of trying to gain attention and money. Tips Industries added that copyright can’t be claimed over how a song is sung or the style in which it is performed. The court has not yet decided if copyright was actually violated.
