72nd National Film Awards To Be Held In Gujarat For FIRST Time

Since its inception in 1954 at Vigyan Bhawan in Delhi, the ceremony has been held in the national capital on numerous occasions. This year, however, the awards will be hosted in Ekta Nagar, formerly known as Kevadia. Ekta Nagar is renowned for being the home of the Statue of Unity, the world’s tallest statue dedicated to Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel. The monument, standing at 597 feet, was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2018.

Article 370 Leads This Year’s Winners

The winners of the 72nd National Film Awards were announced in July. Article 370 was honoured as the Best Feature Film. The lead actress Yami Gautam will receive the Best Actress award for her performance. Malayalam superstar Mammootty and Bollywood actor Kartik Aaryan shared the Best Actor award. Mammootty was recognised for his role in Bramayugam, while Aaryan won for his performance in Chandu Champion. Actor-filmmaker Randeep Hooda also made a mark, earning the Best Debut Director award for Swatantrya Veer Savarkar. His directorial debut based on the life of Vinayak Damodar Savarkar.

Major Winners

Nag Ashwin’s Telugu science-fiction epic Kalki 2898 AD received the Best Popular Film Providing Wholesome Entertainment award. Tamil film Captain Miller, directed by Arun Matheswaran and starring Dhanush, was named the Best Feature Film Promoting National, Social, and Environmental Values. The September 22 ceremony is expected to bring together many of this year’s top winners.
