Just when most of the filmmakers are trying to floss up their cinema with stories which might seem unreal, we have one director-producer who’s changing the narrative of Indian films with each passing day. Aanand L Rai can easily be called the pioneer of small-town movies. With films like ‘Tanu Weds Manu’, ‘Raanjhanaa’, ‘Tanu Weds Manu: Returns’, ‘Nil Battey Sannata’, ‘Happy Bhag Jayegi’, ‘Shubh Mangal Saavdhan‘, ‘Mukkabaaz’, ‘Meri Nimmo’, ‘Happy Phirr Bhag Jayegi’, ‘Manmarziyaan’, and ‘Zero’ to his credit, Rai has always managed to draw a connect with the audience.

Aanand L Rai and Colour Yellow Productions have not just won hearts with their real-life stories but have fairly found commercial acceptance. Touching topics which many might not find comfortable to even talk about, the ace filmmaker is making films on them be it – erectile dysfunction in ‘Shubh Mangal Saavdhan’ or his upcoming release ‘Shubh Mangal Zyada Saavdhan‘ which deals with the subject of homophobia.

Sticking to his roots and yet making movies with progressive characters only proves how confident the production house is about the content they are producing. What stands Rai apart from every other filmmaker is how he’s taking India towards a progressive future with a small-town element attached to it.
