His latest outing, Shaque: Trust No One, now streaming on Netflix, is another example of that. There is an amiability to the character, but Soni never allows it to become simplistic. He plays Khurrana with enough restraint that the character feels like a person rather than just another police officer placed in the story to move the plot forward.

That is perhaps what makes his performance stand out. There is no attempt to make Officer Khurrana larger than life. Instead, Soni lets the character’s quieter moments do the work. His expressions, measured delivery and the natural ease with which he inhabits the role make Khurrana feel grounded even as the mystery around him continues to build. At several points, he almost feels like the show’s anchor, the person audiences can trust while everyone else remains under suspicion.

Shaque adds another shade to that body of work. Officer Khurrana is not written as a conventional heroic cop, and Soni seems to understand that the strength of the character lies precisely in its humanity. He gets a strong part and does what the material demands, without overplaying it.
