Veteran actor Anupam Kher recently reacted to filmmaker David Dhawan’s statement about wanting to retire from filmmaking after Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai. Known for delivering several iconic comedy entertainers over the last four decades, David Dhawan returned to direction after six years with the upcoming Varun Dhawan, Mrunal Thakur and Pooja Hegde starrer. However, his retirement remark did not sit well with close friend and longtime collaborator Anupam Kher.
Anupam Kher Says He ‘Scolded’ David Dhawan Over His Retirement Decision
Speaking to ANI, Anupam revealed that he immediately called David Dhawan after hearing about his retirement plans and jokingly scolded him for even considering the idea. “David Dhawan is my best friend. I go to his house whenever I can. When I learned about his retirement decision, I called him and scolded him. Maine daanta usse (I scolded him). I said, ‘What do you mean, this is your last film? Who are you to decide this is your last film? If the audience loves you, don’t say, ‘ This is my last film,'” Anupam Kher shared.
The actor further explained why he personally does not believe in retirement, especially in creative professions like cinema. “My father used to tell me that retirement is merely a state of mind. As long as you can stand on your own feet and keep doing what you love, there’s no reason to retire. Unfortunately, he later fell ill, but that belief has stayed with me. We are fortunate to be in a profession where there is no fixed age for retirement,” he added.
Anupam Kher and David Dhawan share a long professional association and have worked together in several popular films over the years, including Deewana Mastana and Bade Miyan Chote Miyan. David Dhawan, often referred to as the ‘King of Comedy’, built a successful career directing commercial entertainers and memorable comedy films through the 1990s and early 2000s.

Meanwhile, Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai marks David Dhawan’s fourth collaboration with his son Varun Dhawan. Apart from Varun, the film also stars Mrunal Thakur, Pooja Hegde, Mouni Roy, Rakesh Bedi, Rajesh Kumar and Maniesh Paul in key roles.
The film has also remained in the headlines due to an ongoing legal dispute. Producer Vashu Bhagnani reportedly filed a Rs 400 crore lawsuit alleging the unauthorised use of recreated songs in the film.
On the work front, Anupam Kher was recently seen directing Tanvi The Great. David Dhawan, meanwhile, returns to the big screen with Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai after a six-year gap from direction.
