In India, the #MeToo movement is gaining momentum day by day. As soon as the case of sexual harassment against filmmaker Vikas Bahl resurfaced, the founders of Phantom films dissolved their production house. Comedian, screenwriter, and lyricist Varun Grover who has worked with Phantom on several projects came forward to lend his support to the movement.

Varun took to Twitter and wrote, “I am sorry. As somebody who has been a part of many projects with #Phantom in various capacities (lyrics/writer), I feel ashamed that they failed to provide a safe working environment for women.”

In a turn of events, an anonymous user has accused Varun of sexual misconduct during his college days in BHU. Denying all the charges leveled against him, Varun immediately posted, “I completely, totally, categorically deny all the allegations being made. The screenshot in question is untrue, misleading, and defamatory to say the least. Issuing a detailed statement soon.”

Later, he posted a detailed statement on how he is being fabricated. The writer wrote, “Here’s my detailed statement about the completely fabricated, misleading, and defamatory allegations against me. Am absolutely willing to cooperate and clear my name. Let’s not allow such agenda-driven tactics to derail this movement, please.”

Anurag Kashyap, came forward to support Varun as he wrote, “This man I have known so closely and so so long that I refuse to believe any allegations about him. #believethevictim and investigate the claims and also be careful to not let vested interests sabotage a long pending genuine movement”

Even ‘Masaan’ filmmaker Neeraj Ghaywan supported Varun, and vouched for him.

He further requested people not to derail the movement by leveling false charges against men. Neeraj wrote, “It’s appalling how such slanderous allegations are trying to sabotage the movement in India. Varun is someone who is truly putting his weight and career behind for this movement. It is horribly irresponsible of whoever is behind this to malign him.”

We hope that truth prevails and genuine cases don’t go unheard.
