Anurag Kashyap has voiced his concerns about the pressures and compromises within the Hindi film industry, highlighting how easily Bollywood can bend when faced with those in power. In a recent conversation, he drew a comparison between Bollywood and the South Indian film industries, emphasising why he believes the latter is less prone to such compromises. Kashyap explained that once individuals give in to demands, the initial compromise often leads to further concessions because of the benefits that come with it, making it hard to draw the line later. Anurag Kashyap Reveals Bollywood Compromises Under Pressure
In an interview with Janice Sequeira, Anurag Kashyap stated that he doesn’t believe people in Bollywood willingly compromise; rather, once they do, reversing that decision becomes difficult. He said, “The first compromise opens the door to further compromises, especially because it often comes with significant benefits. Once a person accepts those benefits, it becomes increasingly difficult to shut that door.”
He further compared the regional industries. Kashyap said, “Other industries are very regionally strong, but they have a culture which is so very strong, which can’t be divided on the same lines. But the centre also wants to capture the Hindi-speaking masses. So you will see only those people getting compromised who want to make a dent in the Hindi audience. It’s those kinds of people who bend, not the others. South doesn’t get compromised because they don’t depend on Hindi.”
Kashyap also acknowledged that industry insiders are aware of these compromises. “I think they’re already woken up. Once the door has been opened, it can’t be shut. They’re aware, they’re woken up, they also feel embarrassed, they sometimes feel ashamed. They also can’t do anything about it, which is why nobody voluntarily does anything until they’re specifically asked to, individually asked,” he said.
Anurag’s Project
His recent film, Bandar, is a notable work. Directed by Kashyap and produced by Nikhil Dwivedi under Saffron Magicworks, the film stars Bobby Deol in the lead role. Also seen were Sanya Malhotra, Sapna Pabbi, Saba Azad, Indrajith Sukumaran, Raj B. Shetty, and Jitendra Joshi. Despite receiving positive reviews, many critics lauded it as Kashyap’s best work in years. However, the film underperformed at the box office, earning only Rs 4.97 crore.
