Batwara 1947: Sunny Deol, Preity Zinta’s Period Drama – Another Flop Loading For This Jodi?

Sunny Deol and Preity Zinta, along with Shabana Azmi, Karan Deol and others, are all set to take their fans back in time to when India was divided with their upcoming period drama, Batwata 1947. Despite the trailer releasing on July 28, the hype surrounding the film hasn’t increased and can very well impact how the film performs at the box office from tomorrow.

While reports reveals that the film has collected Rs 40 lakh gross (excluding blocked seats) via advance booking sales for day 1, will Batwara 1947 be able to become a hit or will be another underperfoming film starring Sunny and Preity? Sunny Deol, Preity Zinta’s Past Performance At The Box Office

Batwara 1947 is the fourth on-screen collaboration of Sunny Deol and Preity Zinta as a couple. The duo previously starred opposite each other in the 2001 action thriller Farz, the 2003 spy action thriller The Hero: Love Story Of A Spy and the 2018 action comedy Bhaiaji Superhit. Release in January 2001, Farz’s box office collection place the film in the below-average, average performing list. The film, made on a budget of Rs 10 crore, managed to gross only Rs 16.45 crore at the worldwide box office.

The Hero: Love Story Of A Spy

Just days before the Anil Sharma-directed apy action thriller released, the 2003 Bollywood Producers’ strike happened, preventing the release of new Hindi films in theatres post April 1. However, the film still managed to release in around 500 theatres on April 11. The film earned an impressive Rs 2.22 crore in India on its opening day and minted Rs 11.15 core globally over the weekend. However, despite collecting Rs 45.3 crore worldwide and emerging as the third-highest grossing film of 2003, the film’s was declared as a below average film at the box office. Bhaiaji Superhit

The disaster film Sunny Deol and Preity Zinta starred in was the 2018 action-comedy Bhaiaji Superhit. The film made against an estimated budget of Rs 20-25 crore, managed to earn a lifetime net of Rs 4.48 crore in India.

Based on Asghar Wajahat’s drama Jis Lahore Nai Vekhya, O Jamya E Nai, the film is set in Lahore against the backdrop of the 1947 partition of India and the division of Punjab. It stars Sunny Deol, Preity Zinta, Shabana Azmi and Karan Deol in lead roles. The period also features Ali Fazal, Abhimanyu Singh, Khushi Hajare, and Kanikka Kapur as pivotal characters.

Will Batwara 1947 be Sunny Deol and Preity Zinta’s fourth flop film at the box office – especially given that it will be clashing with Emraan Hashmi’s Awarapan 2? Only time will tell. But given the limited, close to null hype surrounding the film, it seems it may be true.
