Deepika Chikhalia, who famously portrayed Sita in Ramanand Sagar’s classic Ramayan TV series, recently shared her thoughts on the casting of Sai Pallavi in Nitesh Tiwari’s upcoming Ramayana. In an interview, she praised Sai Pallavi as a phenomenal actor. However, she expressed reservations about whether she would look the part of Sita. Scroll down to read what she said.
Deepika Chikhalia Is NOT Sure How Sai Pallavi Will Look Like Sita In Ramayana
Chikhalia highlighted the importance of physical descriptions in the original texts. She cited Tulsidas’s Ramcharitmanas, which describes Sita with specific features such as almond-shaped eyes, a particular height, and specific facial features. The actress recalled that Ramanand Sagar’s casting in 1987 was based on these descriptions. And she questioned whether Sai Pallavi’s look aligns with that image. She also pointed out that the original series remains very fresh in the public memory, making it difficult for any new adaptation to replace it convincingly.
Furthermore, Chikhalia shared that playing Sita in 1987 affected her career. She said she still struggles to find work because the industry has never quite been able to see her beyond that role. She remarked to Variety India, “She’s a phenomenal actor. But I don’t know how she’ll look like Sita. Once we see her, we’ll know.” She also noted that the description of Sita in the Ramcharitmanas doesn’t mention curly hair. This may be interpreted as a subtle reference to Sai Pallavi’s natural curls.
