Ranbir Kapoor, one of Bollywood’s top actors, will soon be seen as Lord Ram in Nitesh Tiwari’s big-budget film Ramayana. The movie is set to release in two parts, the first during Diwali 2026 and the second during Diwali 2027. But before signing on to this mythological epic, Ranbir had another major offer to play legendary singer Kishore Kumar in a biopic directed by Anurag Basu.
Anurag Basu Reveals Ranbir Left Kishore Kumar Biopic For Ramayana
Director Anurag Basu revealed that Ranbir had to make a very difficult decision. He was offered both Ramayana and the Kishore Kumar biopic around the same time. After a lot of thought, Ranbir chose Ramayana. Anurag Basu said that although both he and Ranbir wanted to work together again, their busy schedules didn’t allow it. He added that the choice between the two films was tough, but believes Ranbir made the right decision. Speaking to BBC news, he said, “Haa hopefully. Hum dono toh koshish karte hi rehte hain. Ho nahi raha hai. Woh bhi kar raha hai kaafi saari filmein.”
“Ranbir ke paas choice tha life mein. Aur bechare ke paas wo choice itna mushkil tha uske liye. Kishore ya Ramayana. Kaunsa Pehle shuru kare. Bohot tough choice tha uske liye. Aur usne fir Ramayana chuna. I think it was the right decision. (Ranbir had a choice to make in life, and honestly, it was a really tough one for him — Kishore Kumar or Ramayana. Which one to start first? It was a very difficult decision. In the end, he chose Ramayana, and I think it was the right call),” added Anurag Basu.
Ranbir and Anurag have previously worked together in films like Barfi and Jagga Jasoos. Fans were excited to see them reunite, but it hasn’t worked out yet.
Meanwhile, Anurag Basu has reportedly offered the Kishore Kumar biopic to Aamir Khan. According to reports, Aamir and Basu have already met several times to discuss the project. While Basu didn’t confirm anything, he did say the film has faced many ups and downs over the years, and he hopes it finally gets made.
“I’ve been trying to make this film for the last ten years,” he said, “but I don’t want to jinx it by talking too much before it’s official.” Fans now eagerly wait to see Ranbir as Lord Ram and hope the Kishore Kumar film also moves forward soon.
