Emraan Hashmi Breaks Silence On Playing Mehmood In ‘Pancham Da’ RD Burman Biopic; Says, “I Haven’t Been Approached”

Rahul Dev Burman, affectionately known as Pancham Da among his fans, left an indelible mark on Indian cinema. His music continues to inspire new generations of musicians, and his life story has all the makings of a compelling film. The latest update is that Excel Entertainment, helmed by Farhan Akhtar and Ritesh Sidhwani, is developing a biopic on the legendary composer. Once the promotions for ‘Mirzapur: The Movie’ conclude, filming is expected to commence. Reports also indicate that Emraan Hashmi has been cast to portray Mehmood in the project.

Emraan Hashmi Denies Involvement In ‘Pancham Da’ RD Burman Biopic

However, Emraan Hashmi has dismissed these reports. He clarified on an Instagram story, “Just to clarify, the report about me playing Mehmood saab in a biopic are unture. I haven’t been approached for the film, nor am I doing it.” He emphasised that he has no involvement in the still-unannounced project, which is reportedly directed by Neeraj Pandey.

Meanwhile, the film featuring Farhan Akhtar as RD Burman will reportedly include Akshay Kumar portraying the late Rajesh Khanna, Mehmood’s close friend and co-star. According to Pinkvilla, Akshay has dedicated 10 days to shooting scenes that depict the bond and friendship between Khanna and Burman.

The Friendship Between RD Burman And Mehmood

The relationship between RD Burman and Mehmood extended beyond professional collaboration—they were lifelong friends. It was Mehmood who gave Burman his big break in the industry. Pancham Da’s debut as a composer came through Mehmood’s project ‘Chhote Nawab,’ though it didn’t turn out as expected. The duo teamed up again on ‘Bhoot Bangla’ in 1965, creating music that resonated with audiences. Mehmood also wanted Burman to star as the lead in Padosan. It was an offer Burman declined, leading Sunil Dutt to take the role instead. Nonetheless, Burman composed the evergreen song ‘Ek Chatur Naar’ for the film.

RD Burman’s Musical Legacy

Born into a musical family, being the son of Sachin Dev Burman, RD Burman carried forward his father’s legacy but carved out his own distinctive style. He blended Indian classical music with rock, jazz, funk, Latin rhythms, and electronic sounds. He pioneered a new era in film music. His iconic tracks include ‘Aap Ki Aankhon Mein Kuch,’ ‘Dum Maro Dum,’ ‘Piya Tu Ab To Aaja,’ ‘Chura Liya Hai Tumne Jo Dil Ko,’ ‘O Mere Dil Ke Chain,’ ‘Yeh Shaam Mastani,’ ‘Mere Naina Sawan Bhadon,’ ‘Musafir Hoon Yaaron,’ ‘Rimjhim Gire Saawan,’ ‘Tere Bina Zindagi Se Koi,’ ‘Bade Achhe Lagte Hain,’ ‘Ek Ladki Ko Dekha,’ and ‘Humein Tumse Pyaar Kitna.’

Emraan Hashmi’s Projects

Emraan is all set to reprise his role as Shivam in Awarapan 2. It also stars Shabana Azmi and Disha Patani. Directed by Nitin Kakkar, the film is slated for release on August 14, coinciding with Sunny Deol’s ‘Batwara 1947.’
