The first half of ‘Jalebi’ is stale, cold and not sweet at all. It’s tough to say what is worse – the script, the melodramatic performances or Mahesh Bhatt’s mood when the reviews of this movie will pour in. The movie starts with Ayesha (Rhea Chakraborty) crying her heart out to her father because even after so many years, she can’t find a way to mend her broken heart after her break-up with Dev (Varun Mitra).

The movie has a non-linear narrative and keeps jumping from flashbacks to the present day. We see Ayesha and Dev fall in love much like how protagonists fall in love in most romantic movies. They go on a few dates, crack a few jokes and suddenly, they cannot live without each other. They get married and all seems to go well until Rhea takes up a 9 to 5 job, and all hell breaks loose.

She wants Dev to move away from his ancestral home (which she calls a Kandahar). Dev disagrees and the couple has a huge fight. So far, the movie has been from Rhea’s point of view, and it is safe to say that she is the protagonist. We are not really excited about the second half, but we’ll try to taste it nevertheless.
