Megastar Rajinikanth has been honoured with the prestigious 51st Dadasaheb Phalke award. Confirming the news, Information and Broadcasting Minister Prakash Javadekar wrote on his Twitter handle,“Happy to announce #Dadasaheb Phalke award for 2020 to one of the greatest actors in history of Indian cinema Rajnikant ji. His contribution as actor, producer and screenwriter has been iconic.”

Considered the highest honour for an artiste in Indian cinema, the award comprises a Swarna Kamal (Golden Lotus) medallion, a shawl, and a cash prize of ₹10,00,000.

The union minister also thanked the jury panel which comprised Asha Bhonsle, Mohanlal, Subhash Ghai, Biswajeet Chatterjee and Shankar Mahadevan. The award ceremony will take place on 3rd May.

Congratulating the Robot actor, Prime Minister Narendra Modi tweeted, “Popular across generations, a body of work few can boast of, diverse roles and an endearing personality…that’s Shri @rajinikanth Ji for you. It is a matter of immense joy that Thalaiva has been conferred with the Dadasaheb Phalke Award. Congratulations to him (sic).”

Reacting to PM’s tweet, the megastar wrote, Immensely humbled and honoured with your greetings and the most prestigious #DadasahebPhalkeAward award respected and dearest Shri @narendramodi ji. My heartfelt thanks to you and the government of India(sic).”

 

The veteran actor was last seen in AR Murugadoss’s Darbar. The Tamil-language action thriller film is directed by A R Murugadoss and produced by Allirajah Subaskaran under Lyca Productions. He is presently shooting for his upcoming film Annaatthe. The film is directed by Siva and produced by Kalanithi Maran under the banner Sun Pictures. It will also feature Meena, Khushbu, Keerthy Suresh, Nayanthara, Prakash Raj, and Vela Ramamoorthy. Annaatthe is a Tamil language action drama movie.

Rajinikanth made his debut in 1975 with K Balachander’s Apoorva Ragangal and has completed over 45 years in Kollywood. He went on to work in blockbusters like Baashha, Thalapathi, Annamalai, Muthu, Sivaji: The Boss, Chandramukhi, and Enthiran, among others. Rajinikanth is also the recipient of Padma Bhushan and Padma Vibhushan awards for his excellent work in the cinema world.
