For Nitish Sharma, securing a role in Nitesh Tiwari’s ‘Ramayana’ came after a challenging phase marked by numerous auditions, setbacks, and an unexpected shift in plans. The newcomer initially auditioned for Lakshman but ultimately found himself playing Shatrughn in the highly anticipated epic. In a candid conversation with Mid-Day, Nitish shared his journey to the film, his experience working alongside Ranbir Kapoor, and his views on the criticism surrounding the casting choices for the film’s lead roles. Nitish Sharma Initially Auditioned For Lakshman’s Role In Ramayana

Nitish’s association with ‘Ramayana’ coincided with a significant professional setback. After auditioning hundreds of times, he was excited to land a prominent role in a major production in 2023—only to be replaced by a senior actor. Rather than feeling disheartened, Nitish turned to reading the Ramcharitmanas for solace. As he was immersed in the Bharat Milap scene, he received a call from Mukesh Chhabra’s office, informing him that Nitesh Tiwari was working on a pilot for ‘Ramayana’ and wanted to audition him for Lakshman.

He recalls, “I was trying to find peace by reading the sacred book. When I was reading the Bharat Milap scene, I received a call from Mukesh Chhabra’s office saying that Nitesh Tiwari was making a pilot film of Ramayana and they wanted to test me for Lakshman. So I did.”

Nitish travelled to Mumbai for the audition, which initially involved only a few scenes where Lakshman was in a supporting role while Lord Ram was central. “Later, Nitesh sir came to me and said, ‘Do one thing, you perform Ram.’ He liked my performance and assured me that he would make me a part of the main film. And here it is,” he shared proudly.

Why Nitish Sharma Did Not Play Lakshman?

Although Nitish auditioned for Lakshman, the role ultimately went to Ravie Dubey. He explains, “For a film of this scale, it was clear that every character would have big stars. In such a large-scale project, many considerations come into play. But I have zero complaints about it.” Despite missing out on his initial target role, Nitish’s performance as Shatrughn became a significant breakthrough, turning what began as an audition for Lakshman into a meaningful opportunity.

Before his role in ‘Ramayana,’ Nitish Sharma was known for playing Sameer Verma in the streaming series ‘Pyaar Paisa Profit.’ He has over 7 years of theatre experience. He has appeared in brand ADs like Toyota, Blackberrys, Manyavar, Swiggy, and Tata Tea. Beyond acting, Sharma has written and directed two short films, ‘Escape’ and ‘The Date.’ ‘Ramayana’ marks his feature film debut, and he is expected to feature prominently in Part One of the franchise.
