A tribute to a legendary singer, Asha Bhosle, has ignited a controversy in Pakistan, after the country’s media authority reprimanded a leading news channel for broadcasting Indian content while reporting on Asha ji’s passing. This incident is notable given that Pakistan has maintained a ban on Indian media since 2018.
Pakistan Channel Gets Notice For Airing Death News Of Asha Bhosle
According to PTI, the Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) has issued a show-cause notice to Geo News. They questioned its decision to feature Indian songs and film clips during its coverage of Asha Bhosle’s death. The move highlights ongoing tensions, as a ban on Indian content has been in place since 2018.
PEMRA described the broadcast as a “wilful defiance” of the Supreme Court of Pakistan’s ruling that prohibits airing Indian material. The regulator cited violations of Rule 15(1) of the PEMRA Rules, 2009, Regulation 18(1)(g) of the PEMRA (Television Broadcast Station Operations) Regulations, 2012, and multiple clauses of the Electronic Media (Programmes and Advertisements) Code of Conduct, 2015.
The authority has summoned the CEO of M/s Independent Media Corporation, owner of Geo News, to appear on April 27. The channel has been asked to submit a written explanation within 14 days, clarifying why disciplinary action should not be taken. PEMRA has also warned of possible penalties, including fines, suspension, or even revocation of the channel’s license under the provisions of the PEMRA Ordinance, 2002, as amended in 2023.
Geo News Managing Director Reacts
In response, Geo News Managing Director Azhar Abbas defended the channel’s editorial decision, stating that revisiting and celebrating an artist’s work is essential when reporting on their life. “It has always been customary to revisit and celebrate the work of iconic artists when reporting on them. For an artist of Asha Bhosle’s stature, we should have shared even more of her timeless songs. Yet, PEMRA has chosen to restrict us,” Abbas wrote on X.

He added, “Art, like knowledge, is a shared heritage of humanity, and it should not be confined by borders.” Abbas also highlighted Bhosle’s connections to Pakistan, noting, “Asha Bhosle admired Pakistan’s legendary singer Noor Jahan, whom she called her ‘elder sister.’ She collaborated with Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan and appreciated the poetry of Urdu poets like Nasir Kazmi.”
PEMRA’s move has also faced criticism from political figures. According to PTI, Pakistan People’s Party Senator Sherry Rehman questioned the regulator’s approach. He urged, “Please, let’s not lose all perspective here, PEMRA, and begin policing cultural expressions.”
He also underscored the importance of art during challenging times. “In times of war and conflict, art and artists should not become casualties. Intellectuals, musicians, and creators are often the voices that oppose hatred and division, and the ones who bring people closer together,” he stated.
State Honors And Final Farewell At Shivaji Park
Asha Bhosle passed away on April 12 due to multi-organ failure at the age of 92. She was cremated with full state honours on Monday at Shivaji Park Crematorium in Mumbai. Her last rites were performed by her son, Anand Bhosle. Actors Vicky Kaushal, Aamir Khan, Vivek Oberoi, Padmini Kolhapure, and Jackie Shroff, among others, were present.
