Filmmaker Rajkumar Hirani has revealed exciting details about the highly anticipated sequel to the hit film 3 Idiots. After actor Aamir Khan confirmed that the project was in development, fans have been eagerly awaiting updates. Now, Hirani has shared insights into where the story of the beloved characters—Rancho (Aamir Khan), Farhan (R. Madhavan), and Raju (Sharman Joshi)—will head, years after the original.
Rajkumar Hirani Reveals 3 Idiots Sequel To Feature Leads In Mid-Life Crisis
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter India, Hirani disclosed that he and his writing partner, Abhijat Joshi, are actively working on developing the sequel’s story and script. He explained that the focus is on exploring the lives of these characters 15 to 20 years after their college days. “There is a lot of work left. It’s primarily about what happens to these characters 15-20 years later. It’s not about college or anything. They are married and have children now. They are experiencing mid-life crisis, and so we will have to see, now what next?” he said.
Hirani emphasised that, like the original, the sequel will carry a meaningful message. “The script still needs some work, but the story itself is really good — unusual, with the same humour as the first film. It follows the characters from 3 Idiots, picking up 10 years later,” he shared.
Aamir Confirms 3 Idiots Sequel
Aamir Khan previously confirmed the development of the sequel during an interview in April. He stated, “Raju is working on 3 Idiots 2 right now. I’ve heard the story, and it’s wonderful. The script still needs some work, but the story itself is really good — unusual, with the same humour as the first film. It follows the characters from 3 Idiots, picking up 10 years later.”
About The Film
3 Idiots remains one of the most beloved films in Hindi cinema. Directed, written, and produced by Rajkumar Hirani and Vidhu Vinod Chopra, respectively, the film starred Aamir Khan, R. Madhavan, and Sharman Joshi in leading roles, with Kareena Kapoor, Boman Irani, Mona Singh, and Omi Vaidya in supporting roles.
The film’s iconic phrase, “All is well,” became a cultural catchphrase. It won three National Awards, achieved massive commercial success in India, and gained international popularity, especially in China. The film’s impact led to remakes in Tamil as Nanban (2012) and in Mexico as 3 Idiotas (2017).
