Aamir Khan has confirmed that a sequel to his blockbuster 2009 comedy-drama 3 Idiots is in development. The film is expected to bring back its original cast, including R Madhavan and Sharman Joshi, and will be directed by Rajkumar Hirani, who also directed the first instalment. 3 Idiots, directed by Hirani, starred Aamir Khan, R Madhavan, and Sharman Joshi.
Aamir Khan Confirms 3 Idiots Sequel
Khan, who portrayed the quirky inventor Phunsukh Wangdu in the film about the friendship of three engineering students. He revealed that he had heard the story by Hirani and his long-time collaborator Abhijat Joshi and “loved it.”
“Raju is working on 3 Idiots 2 right now. I’ve heard the story and it’s wonderful,” Khan said in an interview with Amar Ujala while promoting his upcoming production, Ek Din. “The script still needs some work, but the story itself is really good — unusual, with the same humour as the first film. It follows the characters from 3 Idiots, picking up 10 years later,” he added.
Khan is attached to star in a new film that will be announced soon. He also mentioned that he will eventually headline 3 Idiots 2. “It’s a beautiful story conceived by Raju and Abhijat. I’m looking forward to it, and to playing Phunsukh Wangdu again,” he said.
Aamir Khan’s Upcoming Projects
Khan and Hirani were supposed to reunite for a biopic on cinema pioneer Dadasaheb Phalke. However, the actor confirmed that the project has now been put on hold due to scripting issues.
Although the sequel to 3 Idiots is set to happen, reports suggest that Khan has already identified his next project: a biopic of BharatPe co-founder and entrepreneur Ashneer Grover. While there is no official confirmation, it is reported that the film will also star Shraddha Kapoor. It will be directed and produced by Rahul Mody. Scheduled for theatrical release on May 1, Ek Din is a remake of the 2016 Thai film One Day. It is headlined by Junaid Khan and Sai Pallavi.
