Former India football team captain Subimal Goswami popularly known as Chuni Goswami breathed his last on April 30. Condolence messages and tributes poured for him from all over the nation. Bollywood celebs like Ajay Devgn and filmmaker Boney Kapoor also offered condolences to the legendary footballer’s family and friends on social media.

As per an IANS report, Chuni breathed his last in a Kolkata hospital on Thursday after suffering a cardiac arrest. The 82-year-old former footballer left for the heavenly abode after battling a prolonged illness.

Offering his heartfelt condolences, Ajay Devgn, took to his Twitter handle and wrote, “While shooting Maidaan, I became acquainted with football legend Chuni Goswami’s contribution to the sport. Heartfelt condolences to his family.(sic)”

Yes, Ajay will be starring in a film titled ‘Maidaan’ which chronicles the golden period of Indian football. The actor will be playing the role of late legendary coach Syed Abdul Rahim. The period drama is helmed by Amit Sharma and Boney Kapoor is one of its producers.

Even Boney mourned the footballer’s death by posting, “My heartfelt condolences to the family of Legendary Indian footballer Chuni Goswami who passed away today. Captain of the Indian football team, he also lead Bengal Ranji team#RIPLegend #IndianFootball #ChuniGoswami.”

“One after another sad news! The Former India football captain “Chuni Goswami” left us today and went to the world of stars! What a great human being and a brilliant player he was…May his soul rests in peace…my sincere condolence to his entire family, ” wrote actress Rituparna Sengupta.

Regarded as one of the greatest footballers ever produced by India, Chuni Goswami played 50 matches for India from 1956 to 1964, including the Olympics. He even led India to bag Gold at the 1962 Asian Games. His contribution to Indian sports is tremendous.
