Samay Raina Summoned By SC Over Mocking Disabled People
On Tuesday, comedian Samay Raina chose not to comment on the allegations related to derogatory remarks against disabled individuals. He stated to CNN, “Whatever I have to say, I’ll say in court.” Visuals showed Raina arriving at Court 2 of the Supreme Court, where the hearing is set to take place shortly.
The Supreme Court expressed its concern over jokes made by Samay Raina about a differently-abled child, stating it was “disturbed by the allegations,” which could further complicate his legal situation. The remarks come amid heightened controversy and ongoing hearings regarding India’s Got Latent show. Raina, the show’s ideator, along with podcaster Ranveer Allahabadia, faces criticism for crude jokes aired on the show.
The court observed that comedian Samay Raina’s comments were “in poor taste,” highlighting concerns over online content that may breach standards of decency and inclusivity. The bench also indicated that the case could set a precedent in defining the boundaries of comedy and influencer speech in the digital age.
Particularly, the court noted Raina’s controversial reference to a baby needing an Rs 16 crore injection for Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA), which was featured in the roast comedy show India’s Got Latent, hosted by Ranveer Allahbadia. “We are really disturbed by the allegations. We place such instances on record, implead the concerned persons, and suggest measures. Then we will see,” said Justice Surya Kant during the proceedings.
