Kapil Sharma’s The Great Indian Kapil Show and Samay Raina’s India’s Got Latent Season 2 are pretty famous and loved shows today that needs no introduction. While the former initially aired on TV under two different names – Comedy Nights with Kapil on Colors and The Kapil Sharma Show on Sony, it began streaming on Netflix India since 2024 as The Great Indian Kapil Show. As for Samay’s show, the controversial stand-up show – which originally streamed on YouTube, made its way to the OTT giant just last month.
But why do we say Samay is the new Kapil? Well our justification is listed below and let us know if you agree with it.
Samay Raina Is The New Kapil Sharma?
Ever since Kapil Sharma began hosting his talk shows – complete with skits, audience interaction and a sit-down chat with celebrities, the platform has been used time and time again to promote movies and shows while also celebrating the success of real-life achievers. Since moving to Netflix, The Great Indian Kapil Show has seen stars like Salman Khaan, Ajay Devgn, Rani Mukerji, Shahid Kapoor, Alia Bhatt, Jr NTR, Kriti Sanon, Kartik Aaryan, Varun Dhawan, and many more make their way to the fun couch to talk about live, love and films.
While fans now await season 5 of The Great India Kapil Show, Netflix announced that the second season of Samay Raina’s headline grabbing stand up comedy show would begin streaming on their platform. Unlike Kapil’s sit down comedy, IGL sees contestants put on an unconventional performance attempting to impress the judges and emerge the winner. While a couple of contestants have managed to win hearts or make the news, the show’s guest judges have also stole the spotlight.
IGL Now A Movie Promotion Platform?
In the four episodes released, India’s Got Latent Season 2 has seen the promotions of two films – Alpha and Bhai Tera Star Hai, both directly and indirectly. Let’s elaborate. The show’s opening episode features Alia Bhatt and Sharvari as their guest judges. While the promotions of the YRF spy action thriller was the main focus of the show (like how it’s done on The Great Indian Kapil Show), Alia wearing an ‘Alpha’ for nearly the entire episode made sure the film got the spotlight without it actually being pushed down the audiences’ throats.
And now, in episode four, Samay and the makers have done it once more. This time as well, without out-and-out promoting Raghav Juyal’s soon-to-release Bhai Tera Star Hai, the host made sure all who tuned in to watch the show knew about the film’s release. In fact, Samay pretty much gave the film a shout out by when he and Raghav roasted Alpha underperforming at the box office.
One part of the episode saw Raghav Juyal promoting his film saying, “Meri film aarahi hai Bhai Tera Star Hai bahut…” Interupting him, Samay interjected, “Kitni baar khudhi hi batana padega dost. Kaisa star hai?” To this, the dancer-host-actor replied, “Koi nahi, Alia Bhatt ne bhi khudh hi bataya tha.” Raina, quipped, “Uski bhi nahi chali.” Watch the bantar here:
Netflix Dominates Movie Promotions?
With 2 out of 4 episodes directly or indirectly promoting films, it seems like Netflix is making sure all Bollywood stars/makers knock on their door when it comes to promoting their films. Do you agree with our analysis? Do share your thoughts in the comments.
