The Bombay High Court has heard a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) seeking further investigation into the deaths of actor Sushant Singh Rajput and his former manager, Disha Salian. The court cleared accused Rhea Chakraborty and her brother, Shouvik, of charges. Rajput was discovered hanging from the ceiling of his apartment in suburban Bandra, Mumbai, on June 14, 2020. He was 34 years old. Nearly five years after his demise, the case continues to attract public attention, with many still demanding justice. Rhea Chakraborty and her brother Shovik were subsequently investigated by multiple central agencies, including the Enforcement Directorate and the Central Bureau of Investigation. Recently, the Supreme Court granted her relief by dismissing the lookout circular against her and her family. However, her journey through the legal process has been lengthy and challenging.

2020

14th June – Sushant Singh Rajput was found dead at his Bandra residence. Mumbai Police initially classified the death as a suicide by hanging, based on early investigations and a preliminary post-mortem report.

24th June – The post-mortem report was released, confirming the absence of external injuries or struggle marks.

25th July – Sushant’s father, KK Singh, filed a complaint with Patna Police, accusing Rhea Chakraborty of financial fraud and siphoning off Rs 15 crores from Sushant’s bank accounts.

29th July – An FIR was registered against Rhea for abetment of suicide, cheating, wrongful restraint, theft, and criminal breach of trust at Patna’s Rajiv Nagar Police Station.

31st July – The Enforcement Directorate (ED) initiated a money laundering investigation against Rhea Chakraborty, her brother Shovik, and other family members.

5th August – The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) took over the case following a recommendation from the Bihar government.

4th September – The Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) arrested Rhea’s brother, Shovik Chakraborty, and Sushant’s house manager, Samuel Miranda, on charges of procuring drugs.

5th September – Sushant’s former cook, Dipesh Sawant, was also arrested by NCB.

3rd October – An AIIMS medical board concluded that Sushant’s death was due to hanging and suicide, ruling out murder.

7th October – The Bombay High Court granted bail to Rhea Chakraborty, dismissing most charges filed by the NCB.

2021

10th November A special court in Mumbai permitted Rhea Chakraborty to de-freeze her bank accounts and recover her seized laptop and phone.

2022

9th January The same court ordered the de-freezing of bank accounts belonging to two other accused, Jai Madhok and Zaid Vilatra.

1st June – Rhea Chakraborty was granted permission to travel abroad for the IIFA Awards.

27th December – Roopkumar Shah, a mortuary staff member, claimed in an interview that Sushant’s death was not a suicide, citing visible injuries. He offered to record his statement with the CBI, but no further action was taken.

2023

Despite three years having passed since the case began, the CBI had yet to file a chargesheet or provide updates on the investigation’s progress. Meanwhile, the SIT started investigating Disha Salian’s case following political demands.

2024

19th February – The Bombay High Court is scheduled to hear a PIL filed by Rashid Khan Pathan, demanding further investigation into the deaths of Sushant Singh Rajput and Disha Salian.

2025

20th March – Disha Salian’s father publicly stated that his daughter was murdered and called for a CBI probe.

23rd March – The CBI filed a closure report, dismissing everything as foul play. They ended their investigation into Sushant Singh Rajput’s death. A clean chit was given to Rhea Chakraborty and her brother.

FIR Against Rhea

Sushant’s father, KK Singh, filed an FIR in Patna on July 25, 2020. He accused Rhea of abetment of suicide, wrongful restraint, wrongful confinement, theft, criminal breach of trust, and cheating of Rs 15 crore.

Rhea’s Arrest And Detention

On September 8, 2020, Rhea was arrested by the NCB on charges of supplying marijuana to Sushant. She was held in judicial custody for nearly a month before being granted bail by the Bombay High Court on October 7. After this, she was released.

ED, CBI, and NCB Cases Against Rhea

In August, the Enforcement Directorate launched an investigation into money laundering related to Sushant’s death. They questioned Rhea and her brother on August 7. On August 19, the Supreme Court transferred the investigation to the CBI, removing it from Mumbai Police jurisdiction. Concurrently, the NCB began probing drug trafficking and abuse allegations linked to Sushant.

Rhea Chakraborty filed a case against Sushant’s family on September 7, 2020, at Bandra police station. She accused Sushant’s sisters, Priyanka and Meetu Singh, and a doctor, Dr. Tarun Kumar. The allegations include prescribing fake anxiety medication without proper consultation shortly before his death.

Rhea got arrested on September 8, 2020, by the NCB under the NDPS Act. She spent 28 days in judicial custody at Byculla jail. The Bombay High Court granted her bail on October 7. In February 2021, the Bombay High Court dismissed the FIR filed by Rhea against Sushant’s sister Meetu Singh. But permitted the CBI to continue investigating. In March 2021, the NCB filed a charge sheet against Rhea, her brother Showik, and others, related to drug allegations.

Sushant was found dead at his Mumbai residence on June 14, 2020. His death shocked the film industry and fans alike. At that time, Rhea was in a relationship with Sushant for about a year. Additionally, she was living with him until a week before his death, after which she moved out. On July 25, Sushant’s family filed a case in Patna. His father accused Rhea of abetment of suicide, wrongful restraint, wrongful confinement, theft, criminal breach of trust, and cheating.
