Taapsee Pannu has once again spoken her mind about the patterns she observes in Bollywood, particularly criticising the industry’s tendency to cast the same actors in similar roles repeatedly. She explained that when studios rely on just a few familiar faces for romantic or glamorous roles, and another set for thrillers, it hampers originality and leads to films that look and feel alike. Taapsee emphasised that true innovation on screen requires filmmakers to be bolder in their casting choices, bringing fresh faces and perspectives to the table. Scroll down to read the full article.
Taapsee Pannu Calls Out Bollywood’s Obsession With ‘Same Actors
In a candid conversation with Hindustan Times, she pointed out that the repetitive nature of Bollywood films—especially rom-coms and glamorous movies—stems from a limited pool of actors being cast for particular genres. Taapsee emphasised that true innovation on screen requires filmmakers to be bolder in their casting choices, bringing fresh faces and perspectives to the table.
According to her, audiences carry a pre-existing impression of actors based on their past roles, which makes it difficult for a different appearance alone to create a sense of novelty. She noted, “If I’ve seen someone in a glamorous role, and now you make that person wear a sari or a bikini, I have already seen the glamour of that actor. It’s only different, right? So that’s not the actor’s fault.”
She stated, “If you only offer me 10 intense films, I will choose the best out of them, but it will still be a strong woman, intense film because that’s the only genre people have started imagining me in.”
Taapsee’s Film
Her remarks come at a time when she has released her latest film, Gandhari, directed by Devashish Makhija and streaming on Netflix since September 3. The cast also includes Ishwak Singh, Jatin Sarna, Swastika Mukherjee, Mita Vashisht, and Chhaya Kadam.
