Gandhari: Taapsee Pannu Starrer Lands In Copyright Row; Writer Kanika Dhillon’s Production House Denies Claims

Taapsee Pannu is set to make a compelling return with her upcoming Netflix thriller Gandhari, releasing on September 3. However, just days before the release, the film Gandhari has become embroiled in a copyright controversy. Writer Kalyan Bandi has accused the filmmakers of copying his story, which he claims he wrote and registered in 2019, alleging that the film closely resembles his concept of a mother transforming into a fierce protector to rescue her child from child trafficking. Kalyan Bandi, an IIT Madras alumnus and an Inspector with the Central GST and Customs department, shared that he had originally developed a story titled Gandhari in 2019. His narrative centered on a mother who becomes a fierce, goddess-like figure to fight against child trafficking. He claims he pitched this story to Monika Shergill—who was then associated with Voot and is now a Vice President at Netflix—via LinkedIn, and subsequently shared an eight-page script and a synopsis.

Although acknowledged initially, he was told that the concept was not a fit for the platform at the time. He then registered the story with the Screenwriters Association and continued developing it. He even discussed it with Baweja Studios and JioHotstar. The controversy intensified after Netflix announced the film Gandhari for a 2025 release.

Kalyan Bandi expressed suspicion that the title and themes bore a resemblance to his earlier work. He believed only he could connect the title to his concept. He claimed this led to professional setbacks and legal action. This includes a notice for around Rs 40 lakh in compensation. However, he clarified that his primary aim was acknowledgement rather than monetary gain. He mentioned that he chose not to pursue legal action further due to the cost involved.

In response, Kanika Dhillon’s production house, Kathha Pictures, vehemently denied the allegations. They asserted that Gandhari is an original story created independently by Dhillon. The official statement emphasised that the film’s screenplay and story are entirely her own. She developed it without any copying, and urged the public and media to refrain from spreading unverified claims.

Gandhari is set in the fictitious town of Joypurra and tells the story of Bani. She is a mother whose unwavering dedication and resilience are tested as she faces unimaginable challenges. The film, directed by Devashish Makhija, features Ishwak Singh, Chhaya Kadam, Swastika Mukherjee, Mita Vashisht, and Jatin Sarna. It marks the fourth collaboration between Taapsee Pannu and Kanika Dhillon, following Manmarziyaan, Haseen Dillruba, and Phir Aayi Haseen Dillruba. With its blend of action and emotional depth, Gandhari is highly anticipated, despite the ongoing controversy.
