As ISRO turned 50 years old today, ‘Mission Mangal’ – India’s first space film – hit the screens. The film was based on the story of some scientists at the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO). It made a whopping ₹29.16 crores at the box-office making it actor Akshay Kumar’s highest opener till date. It surpasses the Day 1 collection of his last Independence Day release – ‘Gold’.

With ₹29.16 crores, ‘Mission Mangal’ becomes the biggest Independence Day opening in the last 3 years and the 3rd highest opener ever on this day after ‘Singham Returns’ (32Cr) and ‘Ek Tha Tiger’ (31cr). Released in over 3000 screens, it is the widest release in the last 3 years on August 15.

‘Mission Mangal’ which is said to be realistic and entertaining at the same time has created records in South as well. Akshay Kumar who holds a strong market there, gets the widest release for his Hindi film. Beating the opening day of ‘Gold’ by 1.4 times, ‘Mission Mangal’ becomes his biggest Day 1 collection in South as well.

The performances by the leading ladies – Vidya Balan, Taapsee Pannu, Sonakshi Sinha, Kirti Kulhari and Nithya Menen – has been appreciated by both the critics and the cine-goers. The women in the film struck an exceptional balance between their personal lives and their commitment to the Mars program. Having hit the right chord, this Jagan Shakti directorial emerged as the 2nd biggest opener of 2019.

Inspired by one of the most iconic accomplishments of India, ‘Mission Mangal’ has managed to successfully grab people’s attention with its powerful family-friendly appeal and patriotic theme.
