Peddi, starring Ram Charan and Janhvi Kapoor, opened to a massive response at the box office. However, alongside its commercial success, the film also sparked online controversy over the depiction of Janhvi Kapoor’s character, Achiyyamma. Several viewers criticised the film for what they described as the sexualisation of the actor through camera angles, scenes and dialogues. Amid the growing backlash, director Buchi Babu Sana has now issued a public apology and confirmed that the makers will modify certain scenes in the film.
Peddi Director Reacts To Janhvi Kapoor’s Controversial Sexualised Scenes
On Saturday morning, Buchi Babu Sana took to X (formerly Twitter) and addressed the criticism surrounding Janhvi Kapoor’s portrayal in Peddi. In his statement, the filmmaker apologised to viewers who felt uncomfortable with certain portions of the film.
“As a filmmaker, I believe cinema should entertain, inspire, and connect with audiences. It should never make anyone feel uncomfortable or disrespected. We have heard the feedback regarding certain scenes in Peddi and have taken it seriously. I have always had immense respect for women, both on and off screen, and it was never our intention to objectify or disrespect any female character. If any part of the film has been perceived that way, we respect those sentiments, understand the concerns being raised, and sincerely apologize,” he wrote.

The director further confirmed that the makers have decided to alter the criticised portions after reviewing audience reactions. He added, “After reviewing the feedback, we have decided to make changes to the concerned portions. Cinema grows through its connection with audiences, and as storytellers, we have a responsibility to be mindful of evolving perspectives and sensitivities. Every woman deserves to be respected, valued, and represented with dignity. We remain committed to telling stories that celebrate strong characters and uphold those values.”
Buchi Babu Sana concluded his note by thanking viewers for expressing their opinions honestly. “Thank you to everyone who shared their views honestly and sincerely,” he added.
About The Controversy
The controversy mainly revolves around the portrayal of Janhvi Kapoor’s character Achiyyamma in the film. Several viewers criticised scenes featuring repeated close-up shots of the actress’ waist and navel, as well as dialogue they considered inappropriate. Another sequence that drew backlash showed Ram Charan’s character kissing Achiyyamma without consent after following her home. Social media users criticised the scene and argued that it romanticised problematic behaviour.
Many viewers also felt that Janhvi Kapoor’s character lacked narrative depth beyond functioning as the romantic interest in the story. Despite the criticism, the controversy has not impacted the film’s commercial performance so far. Reports suggest that Peddi crossed the Rs 150 crore mark worldwide within two days of release.
