The Jammu and Kashmir Peace Forum has publicly criticised comedians Samay Raina and Sharon Verma over their exchange of jokes related to their backgrounds on India’s Got Latent, Season 2. In a statement issued on Saturday, forum chairman Satish Mahaldar emphasised that while comedy enjoys freedom, it also bears responsibility. Scroll down to read the full story.
Samay Raina, Sharon Verma’s Bihari-Kashmiri Joke Sparks Controversy
Mahaldar stated, “The suffering and displacement of Kashmiri Pandits should not be turned into a joke.” He added, “We believe that comedy must have freedom, but freedom must also carry responsibility. Bihar is not an insult. Kashmir is not a punchline. And the displacement and suffering of Kashmiri Pandits cannot be reduced to a convenient joke, social-media clip or publicity moment.” He highlighted that the controversy should not be exploited to foster hostility between Kashmiri Pandits and Kashmiri Muslims or between Kashmiris and Biharis.
The forum pointed out that Kashmiri Pandits have endured over three decades of displacement, separation from their ancestral homes, and loss of belonging. Mahaldar noted that Raina himself has spoken publicly about his family’s trauma related to displacement. He called for sensitivity rather than censorship.
He further asserted, “We also reject attempts to turn this controversy into hostility between Kashmiri Pandits and Kashmiri Muslims, or between Kashmiris and Biharis. No entire community should be judged by the words of an individual. Kashmir’s history is complicated and its future must be built on truth, reconciliation, justice and mutual dignity.”
What Happened On India’s Got Latent?
The controversy arose after Samay Raina and Sharon Verma exchanged jokes about their respective origins. Verma is from Bihar and Raina is a Kashmiri Pandit. Raina made a remark about stereotypes surrounding migration for work. Verma responded with a joke about Raina’s Kashmiri identity and “getting stoned.” Verma also remarked that she had “at least left her state by choice.”
