About Satluj
Produced by RSVP and MacGuffin Pictures, Satluj went through several title changes. Initially titled Ghalughara – after the Ghalughara massacre, the film received 120 cuts from the CBFC as well as an objection to its title. The apex Sikh religious body, Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC), intervened and CBFC relented. While the cuts reduced, they still asked for the title to be changed. Eventually, the film was named Panjab ’95/Punjab ’95. The film’s trailer was released on YouTube the same year but was removed barely a day later. The film is now releasing with no cuts and a new title.
The social drama stars Diljit Dosanjh alongsidw Arjun Rampal, Kanwaljit Singh, Suvinder Vicky and Geetika Vidya Ohlyan. The film traces Khalra’s decades-long pursuit of justice for more than 25,000 people who disappeared during Punjab’s insurgency-era crackdowns. It also highlights the personal cost of his fight against a system determined to suppress the truth.
The film was set to get its world premiere at the prestigious Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) in 2023 but was removed from the lineup just a day before the premiere date. Reports suggested this was a owing there being ‘political forces at play’ given that Canada has the second largest Sikh population in the world after India. As per Diljit’s recent Insta post, the film has a 9.7 IMDB rating.
