Romanian artist Iulia Vantur, who made a name for herself in India by crooning songs such as Seeti Maar from Radhe, Sikandar’s Lag Jaa Gale and more, recently performed at the Vatican for Pope Leo XIV. During an exclusive conversation with Bollywood Bubble, talking about this accomplishment, Iulia spoke candidly about her journey in Bollywood and shed light on the challenges of being a foreigner in the Indian film industry, just like Elli AvrRam, Katrina Kaif, Nora Fatehi and Jacqueline Fernandez.
Alongside talking about her journey, the singer also opened up about how people’s perception of her has changed over the years. Read on to know all she had to share.
Iulia Vantur Recalls ‘Not Easy But Deeply Personal’ Bollywood Journey
Reflecting on her early days in the industry, Iulia revealed that she deliberately chose to stay low-profile. She said, “I wanted to stay away from the limelight and take it easy, to see if I actually wanted to live here.”
Talking about her initial days in the industry, and not many people knowing her as an individual artist, Iulia said, “People knew me only from a certain perspective, because of which there was a filter, and that filter was not really true.” Given the hype that surrounded the Romanian artist at the start of her career, it can be deduced that the ‘certain perspective’ she is referring to could be Bollywood superstar Salman Khan. For the unversed, Ms Vantur shares a strong bond with the Khan family and is still often spotted at family get-togethers.
Addressing the speculation around her personal life, Iulia reveals why she chose silence over clarification. She said, “I didn’t want to come out and say, ‘I’m like this’ or ‘the truth is this.’ It is what it is. People are free to talk, and they will talk no matter what,” she remarked with calm conviction.
However, things began to change once audiences saw her work, says Iulia. The artist, while noting the change in people’s perspective, said, “Once people saw me perform and prove myself, they realised those pre-labels were not necessarily true.”
Summing up her experience in Bollywood, Iulia acknowledged that the journey was far from easy but deeply personal. “It took me time, but it was my journey,” she said, expressing contentment and happiness with where she stands today.
