National Pet Day

It’s National Pet Day today and the best time to not only celebrate our paw-fect companions aka out pets in real life but also those who made the lives of our favours on-screen characters memorable. Bollywood has always loved to show the bond between animals and humans and the same has been visible in more than dozens of films. Be it a dog or a horse, the Hindi film industry has always highlighted how these four-legged angels love their ‘hoomans’ unconditionally and are more than willing to lay down their lives to keep them from harm.

Today, as we celebrate our pets, here are 7 films that showed us these animals are more than just pets, they are integral parts of our families and even influence our lives.

National Pet Day – 7 Times Bollywood Pets Were Angels In Disguise

Tuffy – Hum Aapke Hain Koun..!

In this 1994 musical family drama, we meet Tuffy – Prem (Salman Khan) and Rajesh’s (Mohnish Bahl) white furry Pomeranian. Tuffy isn’t your typical pet, he’s family – in fact, he’s even the super cute and unbiased umpire during the family’s cricket match. While this is all sweet, he wins extra brownie points for the role he played in making sure Prem and Nisha’s (Madhuri Dixit) love story gets a happily-ever-after.

Pluto – Dil Dhadakne Do

Probably the only functional member in this dysfunctional family, Pluto Mehra (voiced y Aamir Khan) is always there for every member of the household, especially Kabir (Ranveer Singh) and Ayesha (Priyanka Chopra). He not only helps couples fall for each other, but also accompanies the family when they break international laws for the sake of love.

Moti – Mard

In this 1985 action drama, Moti is the only family Raju (Amitabh Bachchan) has. Be it while fighting the Brits (as the British Crown is ruling India during the timeline) and as the corrupt government officers or as he and Ruby (Amrita Singh) go from enemies to lovers, Moti is always by his side, right to the very end.

Moti – Bol Radha Bol

Another Moti on this list who willingly will lay down his life for his master is this black labrador from Bol Radha Bol. In this 1992 film, we saw how canine besties are the most loyal creatures we will ever meet as they are able to recognise us even if we are standing besides a person who looks exactly like us. The immense love and respect Moti had for his master melts the hearts of the audience every time they watch it.

Dobby – Maa

Many say only the most innocent are able to see beyond the veil and interact with spirits of their loved ones. In this 1992 supernatural film, we saw it when Dobby interacts with the ghost of Mamta (Jaya Prada) and helps her keep her son safe from the torture he has to endure at the hands of her money hungry relatives who are responsible for her demise. Some scene of Dobby are sure to move you to tears.

Raja & Jumbo – Khoon Bari Maang

In this film, we witness Aarti Saxena’s (Rekha) close bond not only with her pet dog Jumbo but also her horse Raja. While the world failed to recognises her after she survives a crocodile attack and returns as Jyoti Shah (after a plastic surgery), they immediately recognise her. The film also sees Jumbo take a bullet to save Aarti’s life.

Bhidu – Chillar Party

This 2011 National Film Award movie – that should be watched today given the uproar discussions about street dogs across the nation, told the story of a group of children who take a stand against their society members wanting to remove the building’s domestic help, Fatka’s dog, Bhidu from their premise. Their fight not only highlights a very important issue but also brings the kids and adults of the socciety and neighbourhood closer.

All you pet parents out there, keep every work you have today aside and shower your children with extra, extra, extra love, pampering and treats.
