Pop Kaun REVIEW: This multistarrer wastes talent like Satish Kaushik, Johnny Lever, Saurabh Shukla

Pop Kaun Movie REVIEW:

Pop Kaun is a comedy series which is created by Farhad Samji. The series is an ultimate casting coup as it flaunts stellar actors like Kunal Kemmu, Satish Kaushik, Saurabh Shukla, Johnny Lever, Rajpal Yadav, Chunky Panday, Ashwini Kalsekar who have all the potential to make you roll on the floor laughing; however, Pop Kaun is definitely not that kind of film. The series is about a man who is hunting for his real father as his girlfriend’s father believes that a person’s identity is only known by their father.

However, later, he gets to know that Brig Kishore (Johnny Lever) is not his father but Sultan Qureshi (Rajpal Yadav) is his father. Sahil then starts dressing up like a Muslim with kohl eyes and Kufis and changed his name from Sahil to Sadiq. Sahil then finds out that Sultan is not his father but another man named Kartar Singh. Sahil then changes himself to a Sikh and calls himself Sukhwinder Singh. But this doesn’t end here, he once again discovers that not Kartar Singh (Satish Kaushik) but a man named Anthony Gonsalves (Chunky Panday) is his father. Knowing that his father is a Christian, he dons a rosary.

Farhad Samji tries to convey that no matter what religion one follows, we all should live in harmony while also showing how India is a diverse country. And Farhad chooses to convey this message with a tinge of humour. When I say tinge, well, yeah, it was that little, the rest was lame which will make you chuckle to the least.

Drawbacks:

I don’t know how to write the Pop Kaun review because I’m just stumped. It is making me think why was this made as episodic and why not a movie. Wait, it is making me question its creation like why was this made in the first place. I’m trying not to bash this series as it boasts some incredible actors but they are a total waste in the 6-episode series. I can’t even say that it is a light-hearted comedy that will tickle your funny bone. Zyada se zyada, you will chuckle in some parts while you will continue to have a straight face throughout the series.

The Farhad Samji directorial venture is a comedy-drama which is full of errors with kiddish behaviour. I don’t think it is made for adults at all because their humour is outdated and to some extent even lousy. What saddens me the most is seeing the talent of the actors like Kunal Kemmu, Satish Kaushik, Saurabh Shukla, Johnny Lever, Rajpal Yadav, Chunky Panday and Ashwini Kalsekar going in vain.

Story:

A young boy who later learns that the father he has been living with since childhood is not his real father. He then goes on a mission to hunt his real father and during the course, he gets to meet many people. But whenever he thinks he has met his father, he is introduced to a different twist

Star Performances:

Kunal Kemmu plays the role of Sahil/ Sadiq/ Sukhi/ Sandy in the series. No, he is not playing 4 roles but 4 characters, you will understand once you watch the series. Kunal’s comic timing is quite good and he does a fabulous job of playing a confused son.

Nupur Sanon tries hard to look convincing but doesn’t impress me at all with her acting prowess. She needs to work on it.

Satish Kaushik is just too cute as Kartar Singh. He played the character with so much innocence and zest that you will love it. Also, I’m going to miss him onscreen as he passed away on March 9 due to heart attack.

Saurabh Shukla is a natural. He is so good in the movie that I didn’t even realise that if he was even acting.

Jamie Lever was just roaming here and there. She is a total waste as her character didn’t add any value. I don’t even know why her character was even penned when she seems to look like an extra. I wish she had used her comic talent in other movies.

Johnny Lever is phenomenal whereas Rajpal Yadav is extraordinary, his facial expression and his comic timing are similar bang on.

Direction/ Screenplay:

Weirdly so, Farhad Samji loves to add the typical quirky elements to his characters, thinking it will add value to the humour. Moreover, he also takes those elements again for his next movie by slightly tweaking them. I know if he is under the impression that people will still enjoy it, I don’t see the point of it at all. For instance, in Housefull 4, Akshay Kumar forgets his memory the moment he listens to a loud sound, similarly, here we see Johnny Lever pausing for 10 seconds, showing that he becomes a statue in several intervals of time. You’ll find tons of similarities not just in direction but in his characters as well.

Farhad makes the series a typical Bollywood film where he not only added outdated humour but also added unnecessary and skippable songs.

Conclusion:

Overall, Pop Kaun is a total waste of talents like Saurabh Shukla, Johnny Lever, Satish Kaushik and more as well as time. Even the strong performances by the star cast couldn’t save this sinking ship. Not their fault, it is the contents for being so flimsy. But that’s not the worst part, Pop Kaun ends with the indication of season 2.
