'Udta Punjab' case in High Court

We all know that CBFC has told the makers of ‘Udta Punjab’ to remove all the references to Punjab from the film. However, it looks like the makers are not ready to do what censor board says.

According to a popular daily, the makers of the film have decided to take the case to the High Court. One of the producers of the movie said, “It is all hearsay. We haven’t received an official letter from either the Revising Committee or the I&B Ministry, whom we have already apprised of the situation. We will release the film on the original date, June 17. This is something we have stood by since the beginning.”

A source from CBFC stated, “Shyam Benegal’s committee report also says the same thing: controversial glory plotlines should either be released with an ‘A’ certificate with no cuts, or be banned entirely because cinema does not deserve to be scissored so the makers may have to succumb to pressure in a bid to salvage their film.”

B-Town is shocked over such decisions for a movie which deals with the real ongoing issues in the state. An insider said, “It is not about cuts any more as the board want the makers to set the film’s plot in a fictitious place. This is very bizarre. How can they ask to remove Punjab from the film?”

“The film depicts the hardcore reality of Punjab that was reported by the media and is well-known. The makers haven’t cooked up something,” added the insider.

One of the Board members, Ashoke Pandit, called such decisions an insult to “freedom of expression”. Pandit said, “If the trailer of the film was allowed, what is the problem with the film? What kind of situation are we heading to? It is a dangerous trend. I am sure the film will be cleared in the tribunal. It is the most comic decision to ask them not to use the word Punjab. If the state government or any political party had objections to the film or its content, they should have gone to court.”

Directed by Abhishek Chaubey, ‘Udta Punjab’ stars Shahid Kapoor, Kareena Kapoor Khan, Alia Bhatt and Diljit Dosanjh. The movie is produced by Balaji Motion Pictures and Phantom Films.
