In 1982, Smita gave two commercial hits - Namak Halal and Shakti in which she was paired against Megastar Amitabh Bachchan. She has also worked with Superstar Rajesh Khanna in Angaaray, Akhir Kyun, Amrit and Awam.
Apart from acting, Smita Patil was an active feminist and a member of the Women's Centre in Mumbai. In her films, Patil's character often represents an intelligent femininity that stands in relief against the conventional background of male-dominated cinema. She became famous for her roles in films that portrayed women as capable and empowered.
Smita Patil made her debut with 'Mere Saath Chal' in 1974. She was regarded as one of the finest actress of her times. She worked in more than 75 Hindi and regional films in the career of 11 years.
