Sabbir Khan on his film 'Baaghi'

Tiger Shroff and Shraddha Kapoor starrer ‘Baaghi‘ appears to be a heavy-duty action drama but director Sabbir Khan says the film’s story is inspired by mythology epic ‘Ramayana’.

Sabbir says the idea came to him after he watched 2004 Telugu film ‘Varsham’ on the insistence of producer Sajid Nadiadwala.

“Sajid showed me Telugu film ‘Varsham’, of which he also has the rights. I watched it and told him that it is redundant today and the only thing that excited me about it was that it was an adaption of Ramayana,” Sabbir told PTI in an interview.

“So, I thought what if we adapt the Ramayana today, it will make for an exciting film. It took us nine months to write the script. So, ‘Baaghi’ is my version of the Ramayana combined with very strong love story and great action” the director said.

Sabbir does not mind that audience is not much aware of the ‘Ramayana’ inspiration behind ‘Baaghi’ and is more excited about Tiger-Shraddha’s on-screen pair and the action sequences.

“People think it’s an action film and I don’t want to change that because action and music are universal and all of us enjoy that. It’s only now that the promotions have started that I am talking about this aspect.”

The director wants ‘Baaghi’ to be a trendsetter for action movies.

“We wanted to push boundaries. We wanted people to remember the action in the film for years to come. So, my hero does not carry any weapon, there are no cars flying… We made things difficult for ourselves but just to give audience a never-seen-before action film.”

Also starring Telugu actor Sudheer Babu, the movie hits theatres this Friday.
