Gulfam Khan Hussain: We Have A Long Way Before We Are Free From Regression, Oppression
Sharing her thoughts about India being independent, Gulfam Khan Hussain says, “Every now and then there are instances when we take freedom in general for granted. This 15th August it will be stepping into 80th year of Independence, gaining freedom… freedom from a regime but we have a long way to go before we are free from regression, oppression and getting pushed back and all this can happen only from within ourselves. We still have atrocities against women, injustice towards poor, tied to old and regressive thought process. I strongly feel we need to get freedom from these too.”
Gulfam feels whenever she paints she feels very free, independent. To her it’s a liberating feeling. When asked if there has there been a moment in her life when choosing your own path felt like an act of courage, Gulfam says, ”Yes of course… Many a times. When I came from a strict Pathan family but chose to be an actor. When I walked out of long standing relationship because it was toxic and even when I left a close knit group of friends when I realised it was not good for my heart and soul. I have taken a lot of decisions in my life independently.”
Gulfam feels one value about India that she hopes never changes, no matter how much the country evolves, is Freedom of speech, cultural beauty and most of all brotherhood and unity amongst all citizens. She adds,”We see rifts and small squabbles every now and then but eventually we merge as one. It’s the magic of our soil. One Indian who has inspired me the most—has to be our dearest one time president Late Dr Abdul Kalam Azad. And lastly Gulfam who has worked with filmmakers like Reema Kagti, Nagesh Kukunoor, Sooni Taraporewala conveys a message to the young people of India. “Unity, courage and virtue… follow these principles. You are the future you are our only hope. Vande Mataram.”
