Ramanand Sagar’s ‘Ramayan’ has beaten the viewership record of ‘Game Of Thrones’ globally. For the unversed, the final episode of ‘GoT’ brought in a series record of 19.3 million viewers. Now, ‘Ramayan’ becomes the most viewed program worldwide. The last episode of the re-run show was aired on May 2. The show was re-telecasted on Doordarshan after Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced a nationwide lockdown due to the coronavirus outbreak.

DD National wrote on its official Twitter handle, “Rebroadcast of Ramayana on Doordarshan smashes viewership records worldwide, the show becomes most watched entertainment show in the world with 7.7 crore viewers on 16th of April.”

Its another tweet read: “Thanks to all our viewers! #RAMAYAN – WORLD RECORD! Highest Viewed Entertainment Program Globally.”

Dipika Chikhlia who played Sita is elated that ‘Ramayan’ has broken ‘GoT’s record. She told IANS, “I am really overjoyed that it has overtaken Game Of Thrones. I thought it was one show that everyone has viewed and when I looked into it that ‘Ramayan’ has overtaken ‘Game Of Thrones’, I was really very happy. I am really very happy about it. It is great news.”

‘Ramayan’ was one of the most popular television shows of the 80s. It aired on Doordarshan and it featured Arun Govil as Ram, Sunil Lahri as Lakshman, Arvind Trivedi as Raavan and Dara Singh as Hanuman. It originally aired from 25 January 1987 to 31 July 1988.

‘Shri Krishna’ will be aired from today onwards.
