The popular show of the 80s is being retelecasted on Doordarshan since March 28 onwards. Last night, DD India shared on Twitter, “Rebroadcast of #Ramayana on #Doordarshan smashes viewership records worldwide, the show becomes most-watched entertainment show in the world with 7.7 crore viewers on 16th of April”

It’s amazing how even a rerun of an old show has generated this much excitement amongst the viewers to make it the most-watched show.

Ramanand Sagar’s ‘Ramayan’ was one of the most popular television shows of the 80s. It aired on Doordarshan and it featured Arun Govil as Ram and Deepika Chikhalia as Sita, Arvind Trivedi as Raavan and Dara Singh as Hanuman. It originally aired from 25 January 1987 to 31 July 1988.

As per an IANS report, ‘Ramayan’ became the most-watched serial in the world from 1987 to 1988. It remained recorded in the Limca Book of Records as “the most-watched mythological serial in the world” till June 2003. Based on Valmiki’s ‘Ramayana’ and Tulsidas’ Ramcharitmanas, the show has a total of 78 episodes.

It’s popularity still remains the same as people are spending most of their lockdown time catching up on the show all over again.
