Aamir Khan Darr

Aamir Khan is the Mr Perfectionist of Bollywood and it’s all thanks to his performances in films such as Taare Zameen Par, Ghajini, PK, Dangal and many more. As the actor is all set to enter his 60s this Friday (March 14), PVR-INOX has announced a special film festival commemorating Aamir’s contribution to Indian cinema titled, Aamir Khan: Cinema Ka Jadugar.

At the festival’s launch event today, Aamir opened up about why he let go of some of films that emerged as some of the biggest box office successes of his contemporaries. For those who do not know, Aamir revealed that he rejected several film in his illustrative career, including Shah Rukh Khan’s Darr, Salman Khan’s Bajrangi Bhaijaan and Sanjay Dutt’s Lage Raho Munna Bhai. Read on to know why he said no to them and if he had ever regretted those decisions.

Aamir Khan: I Don’t Regret Rejecting Darr

While Yash Chopra’s Darr catapulted Shah Rukh Khan to a newfound fame, not many know that 1993 blockbuster thriller was initially offered to Aamir Khan. Talking about rejecting the film – also starring Juhi Chawla and Sunny Deol, Aamir stated that he has no regrets. The actor told the media, “I was doing a film called ‘Darr’ but I didn’t do it. That was for other reasons. Not for creative reasons.”

He continued, “I feel whatever happened, happened for the better. Even today, I feel Shah Rukh suited slightly better the ‘sur’ that Yash ji had visualised for the character.” The ‘Laal Singh Chaddha’ actor continued, “Had I done that film it would have become something else because I was looking at it differently. I don’t really regret that because that was a good film and went on to be a success.”

Aamir On Bajrangi Bhaijaan & Lage Raho Munna Bhai

Talking about saying ‘no’ to Bajrangi Bhaijaan, Aamir Khan stated that he told the film’s screenwriter V Vijayendra Prasad that Salman would be a better fit for the role. He said, “I really liked the script of ‘Bajrangi Bhaijaan’. I said, ‘I like the film but I feel you should take it to Salman Khan’. But he didn’t take the script to Salman, he instead took it to Kabir. Eventually, Kabir went to Salman.”

During the same conversation, Aamir also revealed that filmmaker Rajkummar Hirani had written a script where he wanted him to play the lead role but things changed. While that film went on to become Lage Raho Munna Bhai with Sanjay Dutt in the lead, Aamir and Hirani later collaborated on two blockbuster projects – 3 Idiots and PK.

Talking about why he said no to the standalone Munna Bhai sequel, Khan revealed, “The day he came to narrate the script to me he said, ‘The script I was narrating to you has changed and that has become ‘Munna Bhai 2’ and I don’t have anything else to narrate to you’… I said ‘Even I agree. You should make it as ‘Munna Bhai 2”. I don’t have any regrets.”

On the work front, Aamir will be next seen in Sitaare Zameen Par, a thematic sequel to his 2007 film, Taare Zameen Par. The just announced ‘Aamir Khan: Cinema Ka Jadugar’ will commence on the actor’s 60th birthday on March 14 and will come to a close on March 27.
