At a time when global conversations around social impact and grassroots innovation continue to grow, Arunachalam Muruganantham has made headlines with a significant claim. Widely known as the real-life inspiration behind Pad Man, Muruganantham said he has been nominated for the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize. The development has drawn attention not just for the honour itself, but for the journey that led him here, from a small-town innovator to a globally recognised changemaker.
Akshay Kumar’s Pad Man Inspiration Claims Nobel Peace Prize Nomination
Speaking to ANI about the nomination, Arunachalam Muruganantham admitted he was taken by surprise. “I couldn’t believe it at first… For the Nobel Prize, you cannot submit your name, nor can your friends or family. It has to be a third party… A Dean from Aravind Eye Hospital of Pondicherry and American teams working there submitted my name for the Nobel… It was accepted within 24 hours… I’m really proud…,” he said.
Muruganantham earned recognition for his work in menstrual hygiene. He developed low-cost sanitary pad-making machines aimed at rural India. His innovation helped make menstrual products more affordable and accessible. It also created employment opportunities for women through small-scale production units. Over time, his work broke long-standing taboos around menstruation and improved awareness in underserved communities. His story later reached a wider audience through cinema, turning him into a household name.
About The Nobel Peace Prize
Reports suggest he is among hundreds of candidates considered for the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize, which includes both individuals and organisations. The Nobel process remains highly confidential, and nominations come from qualified individuals such as academics, previous laureates, and public officials.
About Pad Man (2018)
Pad Man, directed by R. Balki, brought Muruganantham’s journey to the big screen. The film starred Akshay Kumar in the lead, alongside Radhika Apte and Sonam Kapoor. Released in 2018, it drew inspiration from his life and from a story in The Legend of Lakshmi Prasad by Twinkle Khanna. The film focused on a man who challenges social stigma to create affordable sanitary pads. It went on to win the National Film Award for Best Film on Other Social Issues.
Arunachalam Muruganantham’s nomination claim adds another chapter to his already remarkable journey. While the final Nobel decision will come later, his work continues to stand as a powerful example of how local innovation can drive global impact.
