Border To Batwara 1947, Is It Time Sunny Deol Moves Away From India-Pakistan Tension And Drama?

If you ask young audience which genres film Sunny Deol mostly stars in there answer will be films about nationalism. Be it Sunny paaji as an army officer or a layman suffering because of the 1947 partition of India, the actor always delivers an apt performance. But is that all Sunny is capable of, especially given that Batwara 1947 also follows a similar template?

Does Sunny Deol Need To Stop Doing Deshbhakti Films?

While the older generation may remember Sunny Deol in dramas (thrillers, action-packed and more), the actor’s recent performances largely resolves around has revolved one theme – patriotic and mass driven roles. He’s always the patriotic hero fighting the enemy near the LoC or the don’t-mess-with-me Sikh crossing the border for the sake of his family.

While Batwara 1947 sees Sunny as a Muslim this time, crossing the border to keep his family sake in Pakistan, it still sees him as the larger-than-life messiah who is willing to sacrifice everything for the same of someone who is not privileged/is suffering.

Be it Gadar 2 or Border 2, the formula of being the patriotic hero always seems to be work, but is it enough or is the actor playing it too safe? While the films are offering his success, they are restricting his range and killing his versatility. Written and directed by Rajkumar Santoshi, Batwara 1947 is produced by Aamir Khan’s Aamir Khan Productions. Based on Asghar Wajahat’s drama Jis Lahore Nai Vekhya, O Jamya E Nai, the film is set in Lahore against the backdrop of the 1947 partition of India and the division of Punjab. It stars Sunny Deol, Preity Zinta, Shabana Azmi and Karan Deol in lead roles. The period also features Ali Fazal, Abhimanyu Singh, Khushi Hajare, and Kanikka Kapur as pivotal characters.

Will Batwara 1947 be Sunny Deol and Preity Zinta’s fourth flop film at the box office – especially given that it will be clashing with Emraan Hashmi’s Awarapan 2? Only time will tell. But given the limited, close to null hype surrounding the film, it seems it may be true.
