The case that was filed in 2003 was against Daler Mehndi and his late brother Shamsher Singh and two others at a police station in Patiala. Reportedly, more cases of human trafficking against them came into light after the complaint. According to a report in NDTV, the brothers were charged with IPC sections for human trafficking and conspiracy and the Indian Passport Act.

As per the FIR, Mehndi and his brother were accused of illegally sending people abroad disguising them as troupe members in exchange for money. During the investigation, Punjab police had reportedly found enough evidence from Mehndi’s Connaught Place-based office in New Delhi in the form of documents.

The complainants had alleged that Mehndi and Singh had promised them to take them to USA illegally by taking money from them, but didn’t do so. It was also alleged that the brothers took about 10 people to USA, posing them as troupe members during 1998 and 1999. According to PTI, Mehndi (in company of a female actor) had also allegedly “dropped off” three girls in San Francisco.

Mehndi is known for his songs in Punjabi and Hindi films as well and has been the voice behind some chartbusters like Rang De Basanti, Aila Re Aila, Bhootni Ke and Zor Ka Jhatka.
