There was a time when sex or having kids before marriage was considered a tabboo in our society. While some people have started accepting other lifestyles and people’s choices today, there are still some who don’t yet feel comfortable of having physical intimacy before tying the knot, be it for them or for someone else. Premarital sex and premarital pregnancy are still frowned upon by some people and in a conversation with ETimes, actress Dia Mirza offered her take on the subject.

Dia Mirza got married to husband Vaibhav Rekhi last year in February and in April, she announced her pregnancy with their first kid. While most of the people admired and supported her in the way she decided to lead her life, there were some who questioned it as well. It was on May 14, 2021 that she gave premature birth to her son Avyaan Azaad Rekhi, the announcement of which she made two months later.

In her latest interview, Dia insisted that when to have sex or a kid is a person’s own choice. She said, “I feel when it comes to personal choice and the power of personal choice, it can only be celebrated by those who ensure they make personal choices, not threatened, not afraid of making the choice that you need to as an individual. And while there may be many people with regressive thoughts on things like premarital sex or premarital pregnancy or any other things for that matter, there are enough people who recognise the fact that it is a personal choice, that people have the right to do if they choose to. I don’t think we are as progressive as we imagine or as we consider ourselves to be.”

The actress also opened up about women’s rights in today’s time saying it’s the “dark ages” in many aspects when it comes to that issue.  She shared, “Look at the kind of crimes that continue to be committed against women. Look at America, it’s supposed to be a great democracy, right? Look how far behind they have gone when it comes to women’s rights. Women can’t go through abortion if they want! At least in India, the law protects women and their rights. I think as a society we need to learn to respect that more.”

Dia has always led an inspirational path for others to follow, be it with her advocacies or the way she leads her own life. Professionally too, she has an interesting film like Dhak Dhak in the pipeline that aims to tell a story of women supporting other women.
