Sunidhi Chauhan and Shalmali Kholgade are undoubtedly some of the most sought-after singers in our country. The two recently came out with their original independent single titled Here is Beautiful. The song has tugged at everyone’s heartstrings and has made people wanting for them to collaborate more. In a candid chat with Bollywood Bubble, Sunidhi Chauhan and Shalmali opened up on what gave them the courage to take up the first step towards independent music, the challenges, and the excitement of it. Sunidhi and Shalmali also opened up on the challenges they have endured throughout the journey. Sunidhi Chauhan shared that a music director once told her that she won’t survive the industry because her voice is ‘manly’. Sunidhi also highlighted the many problems with the industry currently and hopes things get better.

Recalling the prejudices she faced, Sunidhi Chauhan told Bubble, “Yes, I did [face prejudices]. In the initial stage of my career, I did face prejudices. I have heard things like back your bags and go home because you cannot sing Lag Jaa Gale in the original key. He questioned my preparedness. He was a very big music director but thanks to him because then I went home and practiced. Then, there was another music director who said that this kind of voice is not going to work. I was told that I have too strong a voice, it sounds like a man’s voice on an actress. So, pack your bags, you won’t survive here.”

Sunidhi Chauhan added that she is thankful to them because that made her stronger and added that today, those music directors perhaps don’t even remember what they told her. “That happened but I am only thankful for those comments because they made me a stronger person. But today, they have memory loss. For them, such things never happened.”

Does the thought of them later work with her give her any high or validation? “It is not high,” Sunidhi confessed and shared, “Honestly, I don’t feel great about it. There is a big responsibility on them to create music for people and I feel they don’t have a broader mindset. So, I feel sad for them.”
