Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh Insaan

Spiritual leader and self-styled Godman Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh Insaan has been accused of rape charges and today the verdict was pronounced by the CBI Court. He has been pronounced guilty and has been sentenced to 10 years of imprisonment in the Rohtak jail.

Of course, this hasn’t settled well with his followers who have been engaging in vandalism since the past few days. Now, as the man has been charged guilty, many other developments in the case have come to the forefront. Ram Rahim Singh was spotted with adopted daughter Honeypreet on Friday as she accompanied him to Rohtak in a helicopter.

In 2011, Honeypreet’s husband Vishwas Gupta, i.e., son-in-law of Ram Rahim Singh Insaan had filed a petition stating that his wife Honeypreet has sexual relations with the man. A report in HT stated that Honeypreet and Vishwas (a Dera follower from Sirsa) have been married since 1999. Vishwas’ grandfather Rulia Ram Gupta who has been an MLA from Gharaunda constituency before was a devotee of Dera Sacha Sauda. They were lured by Dera Chief to sell off their agricultural land and property. An agreement was made that the proceeds would be deposited with the Dera factories and the amount would be returned to Guptas whenever they ask for it, but it didn’t happen and the agreement was breached. Due to this, Vishwas Gupta filed a petition in the high court claiming that his wife Honeypreet has been sexually involved with her father, Ram Rahim Singh Insaan. According to an article in Hindustan Times published in 2011, the petitioner (Vishwas) stated that his wife has not been allowed by Dera head to stay with him “even for a day and she has been kept by him all the time in the Dera by enticing her with intention to have illicit sexual intercourse with her” knowing well that she is a legally wedded wife.

“…petitioner’s belief was shattered when one night petitioner was in Dera Sirsa and he happened to enter the room (guffa) of Dera head and saw the Dera head totally nude and having sex with petitioner’s wife,” alleged the petitioner, a resident of Panchkula. Post this, the petitioner’s family met with threats from Dera people and hence decided to shift from Panchkula.

The current scenario is such that many places in Punjab have been imposed with curfew and his sentence has been raised to twenty years in two separate cases.
