Mostly heard in whispers, periods is still a word that is frown upon. It is considered to be a ‘problem’ rather than a ‘normal’ occurring and we still can’t talk about it in open. But things are going to change with Akshay Kumar, Sonam Kapoor and Radhika Apte’s ‘PadMan’. With such big stars coming out in open and talking about it, we do hope that periods would no more be heard only in whispers.

Promotions of this film are in full swing and media interactions are on. It was here when Sonam Kapoor was asked about her reaction when she got her periods for the first time. Exclaiming that she was quite happy to get her periods, the actress said, “I was 15 when I got my periods and all my friends had got that way before me. I was very upset that I had not got it. So when I actually got it I was very relieved because I kept telling my parents there is something wrong with me as I did not get my periods. So, I was very very happy.”

Further talking about the sad state of women in India, she said, “To know that only 12% of women have access to sanitary napkins is a dismal number. We have 1.6 billion populations, out of which 50% are women, which is a huge number. Out of that only, 12% have access, the fact that millions of women don’t have access to proper menstrual hygiene is scary, they use awful products for themselves, they use ash, they use leaves, it is a bad situation, there is a lot of stigmas attached to it.” (Also Check: PadMan: Akshay Kumar and Sonam Kapoor are at their innocent best in ‘Hu Ba Hu’ song)
