Shivani Raghuvanshi

For Shivani Raghuvanshi, making comedy work on screen is not about delivering punchlines or exaggerating reactions to get a laugh. It is about staying true to the character and allowing humour to emerge naturally from the situation. The actor, who plays Roshni in Dupahiya, believes that the strongest situational comedy comes from treating even the most absurd circumstances with complete sincerity.

Shivani Raghuvanshi: The Best Kind Of Comedy, Especially Situational Comedy, Comes From Truth

Speaking about her approach to the genre, Raghuvanshi explains that actors should not enter a scene with the intention of making it funny. Instead, understanding the emotional reality of the character is what makes the humour effective. She shares, “I think the best kind of comedy, especially situational comedy, comes from truth. You can’t approach a situation with the intention of making it funny. You have to first understand how real and meaningful that situation is to the character experiencing it.”

This philosophy is particularly relevant to a series like Dupahiya, where everyday situations often take unexpected turns. For Raghuvanshi, the challenge is to ensure that the characters remain believable even when the circumstances around them become increasingly eccentric. Rather than playing up the comedy, she focuses on how Roshni would genuinely react to what is happening around her. She adds, “If you start playing the comedy or trying too hard to get a laugh, you risk losing that sense of reality.”

The actor’s approach underlines an important distinction between performing comedy and simply being present in a comic situation. When characters take their problems seriously, the humour often becomes more relatable for the audience. Their reactions do not feel manufactured, and the comedy finds its rhythm without being forced.

For Raghuvanshi, authenticity remains central to the process. By prioritising the character’s emotions over the need to elicit laughter, she allows the humour to grow out of the story itself. It is a reminder that sometimes, the most effective way to make an audience laugh is to never try too hard to be funny.
