Bollywood’s ruling diva Deepika Padukone was last seen in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s period drama ‘Padmaavat’ for which she had garnered accolades. Since the release of the film, the actress has been on a sabbatical for past few months, and now finally to the joy of her fans the Deepika has joined hands with ‘Raazi’ director Meghna Gulzar for her next directorial venture. The film’s story is based on acid attack survivor Laxmi Agarwal.

This news was confirmed by Mumbai Mirror that Deepika Padukone is collaborating with Meghna Gulzar for her next. The reports further revealed that not only will Deepika star in the film but also produce it as the project is quite close to her heart.

For the uninitiated Laxmi Agarwal was just 15 when she was attacked by a 32-year-old man, who was an acquaintance of her family. The assailant had garnered one-sided feelings for Laxmi but she did not reciprocate enraged on being ignored he retaliated in the most gruesome way possible.

Speaking about the project Deepika told Mumbai Mirror, “When I heard this story, I was deeply moved as it’s not just one of violence but of strength and courage, hope and victory. It made such an impact on me, that personally and creatively, I needed to go beyond and so the decision to turn producer.”

When Meghna was asked why she felt Deepika was the apt choice to play Laxmi, the filmmaker revealed that the actress’ physicality matched with Laxmi. “When you take a face as beautiful as hers and portray her as an acid attack survivor, the magnitude of the violence and damage is that much more resounding,” Meghna stated.
