At a time when the industry was largely sceptical about casting R. Madhavan in Rehnaa Hai Terre Dil Mein, producer Vashu Bhagnani chose to trust his instinct. In an exclusive conversation with Bollywood Bubble, Jackky Bhagnani reflected on this defining decision from his father’s career, sharing insights into a mindset that values conviction over consensus. He also revisited his own early days on the film as an assistant, marking the beginning of his journey in the industry. Scroll down to read more.
Jackky Bhagnani On R Madhavan Being Cast In Rehnaa Hai Tere Dil Mein
When asked about the rumours of people advising Vashu Bhagnani not to cast R Madhavan in Rehnaa Hai Tere Dil Mein, Jackky Bhagnani said, “Dekhiye, kya hai, is industry aur is duniya ki ek bahut beautiful cheez hai. Result ke pehle log hazaar cheezein bolte hain, aur result agar positive aa jaata hai toh bolte hain, ‘dekho, humne toh bola tha yeh against the tide jaane wala hai.’ Aur agar negative aata hai toh log bolte hain, ‘dekho, humne bola tha hum right the.’”
He continued, “So I think my father has never believed in working on other people’s opinions. He listens to everyone, but he takes his own decision—and that’s what my training bhi rahi hai. Mujhe bhi wahi aata hai, aur kuch aata nahi hai: suno sabki, karo apni. Because sunna bahut zaroori hai—kabhi koi advice genuinely aisi aa jaati hai jo aapko lagta hai, “yaar, yeh maine socha nahi.” But karo apni, because you cannot be influenced by others, right?”
Concluding the actor said, “Phir kya hota hai—mujhe aisa lagta hai agar aap khud ke decisions lekar kaam nahi karte ho, toh khuda na khasta agar result aapke favour mein nahi aaya, toh aap self-victimising zone mein chale jaate ho: “Yaar, mere saath yeh galat hua.” Main uss cheez mein believe nahi karti. Main kabhi uss zone mein nahi gayi hoon, self-victimising maine aaj tak nahi ki, chahe kitne bhi failures dekhe ho, kitne bhi setbacks aaye ho. Because I feel, maine ek decision liya tha, aur woh decision backfire kar gaya. I have to learn from my mistakes. See, everyone ko winners ke baare mein jaana pasand hai, right? No one likes ki koi aa raha hai aur ro raha hai. Sympathy milti hai, lekin I want to be an inspiration, right? Because that’s how I am as a person.”
Jackky Bhagnani On Working As An Assistant In Rehnaa Hai Tere Dil Mein
Speaking about him working as an Assistant, Jackky said, “Us time pe kya tha, I had just passed my 10th standard. Main us chhutti wale phase mein tha. Aur main lagbhag 150 kilo ka tha, school mein hi, college tab tak start nahi hua tha. Mujhe self-worth ka issue ho raha tha. Us age mein sab mazaak udaate hain—you know, kids can be very direct and sometimes ruthless. Toh mujhe laga ki mujhe apni self-worth ke liye kuch karna chahiye.”
The Youngistan fame continued, “Best cheez jo maine sochi, woh yeh thi ki main apne dad ke paas jaaun aur unse kaam maang loon—actor ke taur pe nahi, balki assistant ke roop mein. Toh main gaya aur maine kaha, ‘Mujhe kaam karna hai. Aap mujhe jo pocket money dete ho, uske alawa main khud earn karna chahta hoon.’ Aur wahin se meri journey shuru hui. Rehnaa Hai Terre Dil Mein ke time par main assistant ban gaya.”
He concluded, “Kyunki main assist kar raha tha, mujhe yaad hai Gautam Menon sir director the. Aur, Maddy ki bhi yeh first film thi. Shoot South Africa mein horaha tha, aur us waqt wahan Indian actors lana itna aasaan nahi tha. Toh unhone bola, ‘Jackky, tu hi kar le. Bas ek chhota sa scene hai. Koi aake phool de raha hai.’ Maine woh kar liya. Sirf isliye kyunki main us din ka shoot bachana chahta tha. Warna main shayad nahi karta. Us waqt main bilkul fight-or-flight mode mein tha—socha wait karne se better hai khud hi kar loon.”
