Javed Akhtar Aamir Khan

Veteran lyricist and screenwriter Javed Akhtar once again proved why his wit remains unmatched, as he shared a light-hearted yet memorable exchange with Aamir Khan at a recent industry event. The interaction took place during an evening hosted by Boman Irani’s scriptwriting initiative, Spiral Bound, which brought together several prominent names from the film industry. Actors like Anil Kapoor, Abhishek Bachchan, Ananya Panday, and Ishaan Khatter were also in attendance, making it a gathering that celebrated storytelling and cinematic craft across generations.

Aamir Khan Commends Javed Akhtar For Staying Relevant Across Generations

During the conversation, Aamir Khan praised Javed Akhtar for his enduring relevance in an industry that constantly evolves. He said, “I always enjoy listening to you, so I keep watching your videos on YouTube and even call you afterwards. I have a question for you: you have been working in the industry for such a long time. You’ve worked with people of different generations, from those your own age when you began, to younger collaborators as you grew more senior, and now, in your eighties, with people in their twenties. How do you remain relevant across generations?”

“I’m Only 80”: Javed Akhtar Corrects Aamir Khan

However, before addressing the question, Javed Akhtar quickly picked up on one detail and responded with his trademark humour. “First of all, don’t say ‘eighties,’” he said, drawing laughter from the audience. “Because even 87 falls in the eighties, and I’m only 80. The ‘s’ you’ve added has had a very negative effect on my age,” he added. The witty correction left the audience in splits, while Aamir Khan smiled and replied, “My apologies.”

Beyond the humour, the exchange reflected the deep respect Aamir holds for Akhtar’s legacy and his ability to stay connected with changing times. The moment has since gone viral, with many praising the veteran writer’s sharp presence of mind and effortless charm.

Meanwhile, on the work front, Aamir Khan recently backed Junaid Khan and Sai Pallavi’s film Ek Din. He was last seen in Sitaare Zameen Par and has also revealed that a sequel to 3 Idiots is currently in the writing stage and will be set 10 years from the original movie. The actor will also be backing Sunny Deol and Preity Zinta-starrer Lahore 1947.

In the end, what stood out from the evening was not just the question about relevance, but Javed Akhtar’s timeless ability to command attention, with humour, clarity, and a perspective that continues to resonate across generations.
