Kamal Haasan

On Tuesday, we came across the shocking news of the murder of activist-journalist Gauri Lankesh. She was shot with four bullets outside her residence in West Bengaluru by unidentified men, resulting in instant death. Her murder has shaken up the entire nation and Bollywood too has been condemning the horrifying act.

Now, veteran South-Bollywood actor Kamal Haasan has condemned the heinous murder and he has expressed his angst on Twitter by writing, “Silencing a voice with a gun is the worst way to win a debate. Condolence to all those who are grieving Gauri Lankesh’s demise.”

Here’s the tweet:

Lankesh was the editor of a Kannada tabloid named Lankesh Patrike and also a columnist for various dailies. Last year, she was convicted in a defamation case filed by MP Prahlad Joshi. On Wednesday, the Government of Karnataka accorded her with a state funeral. Many celebs like Shabana Azmi, Javed Akhtar, Dia Mirza, Shekhar Kapur, Sonam Kapoor and others criticised the attacks. However, apparently some right-wing supporters on Twitter, stated that the Kannada journalist deserved what she got. What a disgusting thing to say! Someone had once said that when a civilsation starts celebrating death, it’s doomed. Wonder what is wrong with these people. Stand-up comedian-actor Vir Das too took a stern stand on the mater and tweeted. He wrote, “If you’re rejoicing in someone’s murder no matter what their political beliefs. Remove the words ‘proud’ & ‘hindu’ from your profile please.” He further wrote, “Sir. A Hindu should be proud of being a Hindu. I certainly am one. They shouldn’t be proud that someone lost their life. That’s un-hindu. And finally, “And to the many many people trolling me right now. Doing so doesn’t make you any more religious than me. Deal with that.”
